The TRU Faculty of Science is multi disciplinary!
The Faculty of Science at TRU encompasses a wide range of science, mathematics, applied technology and health programs. The following departments all fall under the Faculty of Science umbrella.
Animal Health Technology: This department offers a 2 year diploma program. An Animal Health Technologist works under the supervision of veterinarians and veterinary scientists in a variety of areas (see careers in science).
Architectural & Engineering Technology Program (formerly: Engineering Design & Drafting Technology): This department offers a three-year diploma program that provides its graduates with the skills required to enter careers as Building Technologists, and Civil and Mechanical Technicians. Graduates are able to perform as participants in professional teams involved in building projects, civil engineering projects, and mechanical design projects. Graduates may also be involved in construction management.
Biological Sciences - Offers students the choice of 5 majors to complete a 4 year Bachelor of Science Degree -- General Biology; Animal Biology; Ecology& Environmental Biology; Cellular, Molecular & Microbial Biology; and Chemical Biology. (Co-op option is available as well)
Computing Science: This department offers two 4 year degrees, one of which (BCS) is very applied and the other (Major in Computing Science) is more theoretical. The former is strictly geared towards the job market while the latter is geared both towards the job market and to further graduate studies.
Computer Information Systems Technology: This department emphasizes the application of computers to the solution of business related problems. Training includes development of computer systems development skills combined with development of communication skills (written and oral) and business skills.
Digital Art and Design: The Digital Art & Design two-year diploma program is concerned with investigating and developing the processes and applications of computer generated illustration and graphic design.
Electronics and Engineering: This department offers three electronics technician diploma programs that are two years in length in addition to providing the first two years of Professional Engineering education. The diplomas that are offered are for: Computer Automated Systems Technician, Computer Systems Technician, and Telecommunications Technician.
Mathematics and Statistics: The Mathematics and Statistics department offers a B.Sc. with a major in Mathematics or Mathematical Sciences and a B.A.with a major in Mathematics. The inclusion of this department in the school ensures academic support for the other programs.
Natural Resource Sciences: This department offers a 4 year degree program that prepares students for careers in the natural resource sector and provides a unique combination of courses covering biology, ecology, scientific method, and sector specific resource management skills in a cooperative education format.
Physical Sciences: This department is home to three main areas in science –chemistry, geology and physics.
Chemistry - Students can choose to complete majors in Chemistry or Environmental Chemistry or an interdisciplinary degree in Chemical Biology.
Geology - A degree program is underdevelopment. Currently students can take courses in earth science ranging from 1st to 4th year. These courses can be used as lab courses for other disciplines at TRU and in conjunction with Archeology can be used toward a minor in Geoarcheology.
Physics & Astronomy - This department offers a major in Physics that has been designed to serve multiple interests and career plans. A co-op option is available.
Respiratory Therapy: This department offers a comprehensive 3 year program in Respiratory Therapy. Graduates of this program specialize in the assessment and treatment of cardiopulmonary disorders and become certified Respiratory Therapists.
Distance Education: The Faculty of Science offers a comprehensive program of distance education courses in the sciences and health sciences. You may choose a single course or a program of studies. All these courses are supported by a TRU Course Facilitator, are distance delivered, and follow an independent study format. These self contained courses allow you to effectively further your professional education while continuing to work and live in your community. Traditional classroom delivery cannot offer this flexibility.
