Research Opportunities for Undergraduates

From work experience to research scholarships and travel funds, if you are motivated to do research, the opportunities are there for you! Here are some things you should know about:


Internal Opportunities

TRU Undergraduate Research Experience Award Program (UREAP)
This internal award provides a $4500 scholarship with the potential for additional funds for travel and expenses (up to $1000). It is awarded to TRU undergraduate students in all disciplines who would like to engage in original research or artistic inquiry. These awards are available to all full-time TRU students.
2011/2012 Deadlines: February 17, 2012

TRU Undergraduate Research Conference
A Conference on the TRU Campus where students can present the findings of their research through posters, oral presentions and performance. This conference takes place in the spring of each academic year, and is open to all undergraduate students to present or participate as volunteers.

TRU Philosophy, History and Politics (PHP) Conference
Hosted by the TRU Department of Philosphy, History and Politics, PHP is a dynamic conference that explores the past, present and future of our social world.
Next Conference: TBA Winter 2013

Undergraduate Research Assistants
Occasionally, members of the TRU faculty require students to assist in their own research. If you are interested in this opportunity, please speak with your professors.

Co-operative Education Program
This will provide you with PAID career experience to get you started professionally and AMP UP your resume.


Funding Opportunities (adjudicated internally)

NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award Program (USRA) (USRA)
This award provides a minimum $5625 for undergraduate students in the natural sciences and engineering to engage in research over a 16 week period. These awards are often completed over the summer and students often choose to use their research experiences as a form of summer employment. These are very competitive national level awards. If you are interested in applying, speak with your professors.
TRU Application Deadline: February 24, 2012

Environment Canada Atmospheric and Meteorological Undergraduate Supplements
This award provides a $1000 supplement to high-calibre students who have been awarded a USRA to complete studies in atmospheric or meteorological sciences.

NSERC Aboriginal Ambassadors in the Natural Sciences and Engineering Supplement Program
Provides up to $5000 in supplementary funds to Canadian Aboriginal Students  who hold a USRA, Vanier CGS, Alexander Graham Bell CGS, PGS, PDF, IPS, IRDF or Northern Research Internship.

CIHR Health Professional Student Research Award (HPSRA)
This award provides funds to students in a health professional program with funds to engage in research. The award is $4251 for a 13 week research period. Students do not apply for this award, they must be nominated by their departments. If you are interested in the award, speak with your instructors or department chair for more details.

Other Opportunities

Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP)
This program provides full-time students with work experience related to their fields of study and provides them with learning opportunities and paid employment.

Young Canada Works (YCW)
Allows students and recent graduates the chance to put their skills to the test, build career equity, earn money for their education or get started on the right career path.
