7:30pm Guest Speaker - Dr. Jeff McLaughlin

“Ten Cent Seductions and other Comic-Book ‘Issues’”

Abstract: It’s not that the American comic book has been ignored but rather that it’s been viewed as not worthy of serious study. Fortunately, this bias has been rapidly diminishing with the popularization of expensive fat comic books, or what some call ‘Graphic Novels’.  In the past, parents sometimes saw these works as entertainments that might stunt their child’s intellectual development while zealous politicians argued that comics were 10 cent seductions that actually would actually kill their readers.  Publishers made billions while the creators died homeless and forgotten. Funny lighthearted materials indeed...!!! In his talk Dr. McLaughlin will trace the historical, philosophical and political highs and lows of the (mostly superhero) American comic book.
