Samoa school children

Samoa is an archipelago comprised of nine islands located in the South Pacific roughly 15 degrees from the Equator. It is a monarchy state and government is a pariliamentary democracy. Samoa is a developing country with a publicly funded healthcare system, supported by New Zealand and NGO's. A nursing practicum here provides an opportunity to work with a highly valued nursing profession and healthcare team. Epidemiological health challenges include: diabetes, hypertension, rheumatic fever and trauma. There is a strong focus on maternal-child care as reflected in the national motto "Family First." Students will increase their cultural competency as well as nursing skills as they work in acute care and community in urban and rural settings with a focus on Primary Health. Students will utilize praxis as they integrate nursing theory with practice while viewing nursing and healthcare through a cultural lens.
