Lesotho

lesotho school children The country of Lesotho is an independent constitutional monarchy surrounded by South Africa. A practicum placement here offers an opportunity to interact within a third world health care system that is publicly funded and administered by the government of Lesotho and supported by international support agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations.

This country has struggled to address the issues of HIV/AIDS, and TB as well as other common illness such as hypertension, childhood disease / injuries and maternal-child health issues. Students will have an opportunity to gain valuable nursing experience and cultural competencies while working with the Basuto people through community development, primary, secondary and tertiary care placements. The experience will challenge students to integrate their nursing theory, global health concepts, resourcefulness and leadership skills within a basic health care system.
