Kamloops Under Occupation

In a vacant lot across from Spirit Square, supporters of a worldwide movement concerned about the growing inequality between the rich and poor set up their Kamloops outpost.

The Occupy Kamloops camp was one of 35 similar camps across Canada, according to alternative news site rabble.ca.

At any one time there were seven to 15 people at Occupy Kamloops, according to Brayden Savage, one of the people at the camp.

Every Saturday, the people who lived in the camp and their supporters headed down to the square in front of the Kamloops Library to hold a rally.

The camp was dismantled voluntarily on Nov. 15, 2011. Organizers said camp upkeep was taking too much time away from protest work and they were concerned about threats of violence against members of the movement.

The organizers of Occupy Kamloops promised to continue their efforts from a house rented for them at an undisclosed location.
