Latin Hip-Hop in the 'Loops

A new dance craze, latin hip-hop, has broken onto the fitness scene in Kamloops.

Instructor Susy Dubeau is from Costa Rica and brings a unique Latin element to an otherwise regular hip-hop class. Dubeau, who moved to Canada eight years ago, says part of her job is to share her culture through dance classes. She adds her own flavour by incorporating more hip, shoulder and torso movement into the hip-hop style of dance.

Dubeau is known in Costa Rica as a leading dancer and top choreographer. She has a university degree in physical education and dance and has taught classes at the YMCA, various local dance schools and Thompson Rivers University.

The classes are designed for beginners and all ages. Students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zone to try something different and exciting. But Dubeau does her best to cultivate a no-pressure environment to ensure students feel comfortable.

Latin hip-hop classes take place at Nuance Dance Studio, located at 253 Victoria St., every Thursday at 7:30 p.m. For more information on dance classes, visit Shift Enterprise's Facebook page.
