Library Services for Faculty & Staff:
Data Services

The TRU Library provides a data library service to support faculty teaching and research at TRU. Through Statistics Canada's Data Liberation Initiative (DLI), administrators and faculty at TRU have unlimited access to Statistics Canada's non-confidential microdata files, databases and geographic files. Access to these files is restricted to TRU administrators and faculty and their use is governed by the agreement between TRU and Statistics Canada: see the Data Acquisition and Use Agreement.

To access data available through DLI, please contact Christina Nilsen.

The types of data available include:

  • Public use microdata files (PUMFs) - anonymized records from surveys such as the General Social Survey , the Census , National Population Health Survey and the Survey of Labour and Income Dynamics, etc .
  • Major databases - Census Profiles, CANSIM, trade statistics, etc.
  • Geographic files - all standard geographic products (ex/ boundary files) are included
Raw data files require a knowledge of either SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences or SAS (Statistical Analysis System). The geographic files come in 2 formats: MapInfo or ArcInfo. Most Statistics Canada aggregate databases require the use of the "Beyond 20/20 Professional Browser"
