FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some common questions re: TRU's services for Open Learning Students:

Q: I am an Open Learning student.  What library services are available to me?
A: The TRU Library provides services to all TRU students, faculty and staff, wherever you are located, although there are some limits for those living outside of North America. Students living in the Kamloops and Williams Lake areas are strongly encouraged to come into the their local TRU Library in person to borrow library materials.  For more information about TRU's services and resources for Open Learning students, see the Distance, Regional & Open Learning Library Services page at: www.tru.ca/library/distance.html.  Please contact the TRU Library if you have any questions or concerns.  We'd like to hear from you!

Q: I'm taking a TRU-OL course that is being delivered by SFU or UVic. Where do I go for library services?

A: TRU has an arrangement with Simon Fraser University (SFU) and the University of Victoria (UVic) which allows students to register in TRU-OL distance courses delivered by SFU or UVic without having to be admitted to those institutions directly. If you are registered in one of these courses, you will receive your library services from the institution that is delivering the course (i.e., SFU or UVic), not TRU.

If you are taking a TRU-OL course that is being delivered by SFU’s Centre for Online and Distance Education, contact the SFU Library's Telebook Service for library services.

If you are taking a TRU-OL course delivered through the University of Victoria (UVic), contact UVic's Infoline Service.

Q: I'm looking for a document from the old BCOU Library website and I can't find it.  How can I locate it?
A: If you are unable to find something on the TRU library website, please contact the Library as soon as possible and we will help you navigate to the right information.

Q: How do I request a TRU Library account so that I can access the library's online resources (e.g., article databases and e-books) from home?

A: Once a week, the TRU Library automatically adds all new students into the library system. An email will be sent to you with information about your library account, including your library number (your TRU student number/employee number) and your PIN. Your initial PIN will be your six digit birthdate (YYMMDD). (For example, April 14, 1985 would be 850414.) The TRU Library strongly recommends that you change your original birthdate PIN to another number that is more unique, but also easy for you to remember.

If you have not received an email from the TRU Library activating your account, please fill out the online form to request a TRU library account. When you have received your account information, you will be able to access all of the library 's online resources.

Q: My TRU Library account has expired, but I'm still taking courses. How can I reactivate my account?
A: TRU library accounts automatically expire 365 days after they are created in order to meet the requirements of our legally binding contracts with the companies from whom we purchase access to our online databases. These contracts specify that only current TRU students, staff, and faculty are allowed to have access to their online library resources. Unfortunately, the TRU registration systems do not automatically let the library know when students re-register for courses which means that the individual must contact the library to request reactivation of library accounts. To request the reactivation of your account, please email .

Q: Can I pick up and return library material from any TRU Library location?
A: Yes.
