Conference postscript and sponsorship acknowledgements
 

Dear JSAC 2006 Presenters and Participants,

This is a brief conference follow-up note on reimbursements and the planned conference proceedings.

1) Reimbursement
The deadline for receipt of conference reimbursement applications is Dec. 1 (it must arrive at TRU by that date—please send it to the address on the reimbursement form). The JSAC 2006 organizing committee will review the applications for reimbursement at that point. Only reimbursement for accommodation and transportation will be considered (taxi or airporter fares will not be reimbursed). Please remember that for your application, original receipts are necessary (please make a copy for your own records). For the most part, only partial reimbursement will be possible, so if you will need the original receipts returned, please include a note in your application. If you do not have a reimbursement form, please email Tom Waldichuk at
twaldichuk@tru.ca.

The Japan Studies Association of Canada (JSAC) plays a unique role to foster awareness of Japan in Canada and to promote peaceful and multilateral international relations. JSAC is a major promoter of Japan Studies in Canada.

The theme for this year’s conference is Japan at our doorstep and in the changing global community. It will highlight how Japan and a changing Japanese society have influenced communities at local, regional and global scales.These communities not only pertain to social organization, but to social interaction as well. The conference will examine changing communities in the past and present, and from the local scale to regional and international scales. Panels will focus both on communities in Japan and abroad. They will examine such themes as local communities, international communities, language communities and historic communities.

Kamloops, located in the beautiful dry grasslands valleys of south-western British Columbia, is the location of the 19th JSAC conference. This interdisciplinary conference—held at Thompson Rivers University—will bring together scholars and graduate students from across Canada who study Japan. Fields of study include geography, fine arts, anthropology and ethnology, business, trade, literature, cultural studies, history, language and linguistics, psychology, education, sociology, economics and political science. Moreover, this conference will highlight research pertaining to Japanese Canadians and Nikkei groups living outside Japan. As at the 2004 JSAC conference in Victoria, BC, we will also host scholars from the Japanese Association for Canadian Studies, and we anticipate one or two joint panels. In addition, we will have field trips to places within Kamloops and the surrounding countryside.
