Time Zone Update Required for Daylight Savings Time Changes in 2007

Beginning in 2007, daylight saving time will start the second Sunday in March and end the first Sunday in November each year. For 2007, it will begin March 11 and end Nov. 4.

For more information see the BC Government News Release.

Both home and business computer systems in BC's Pacific Time Zone need to be updated to reflect the changes to daylight savings time.

This is especially important at TRU if you are a GroupWise user and are booking appointments between:

  • March 11, 2007 2:00am to April 1, 2007 2:00am
  • October 28, 2007 2:00am and November 4, 2007 2:00am

Below are instruction for updating the time zone on:

  1. Windows XP SP2
  2. Older Versions of Microsoft Operating Systems (e.g. Windows XP SP1, Windows 2000, etc.)
  3. Apple computers running OSX
  4. Blackberries

1) Computers running Windows XP SP2 can use these instructions to update their computers:

a) Click "Here" to install the patch.

b) If you receive the following message the patch has already been installed on your computer.  Click OK and proceed to step 1.g below.

Note: Many PCs at TRU will already have this patch installed as we have sent it out via our automatic update server.  However, updates won't be distributed to home PCs and some TRU PCs.  Running the update and getting the following message does not cause any harm to your PC.

g) If you are a GroupWise user and have already booked appointments between

  • October 28, 2007 2:00am and November 4, 2007 2:00am

use the GroupWise calendar to move the times of these appointments back one hour.

During these time periods it is a good idea to include the time of the appointment in the subject line of the appointment in case the appointment is being viewed on a PC or device that has not had its time zones updated (e.g. Subject: Dentist at 2:00pm).

2) Older Versions of Microsoft Operating Systems (e.g. Windows XP SP1, Windows 2000, etc.) can use these instructions to update their computers:

a) Click "Here" to run the Windows Time Zone editor (TZEDIT).

b) Select "(GMT -08:00)Pacific Time (US & Canada) and click "Edit".

3) Apple computers running OSX

a) Click "Here" to install the patch.

b) Once the patch is installed select "System Preferences..." in the "Chooser".

c) Select "Date & Time" and unlock it if it is locked.

d) Pick your closest city as "Seattle - U.S.A.".

Because of a bug in the patch Apple issued selecting Vancouver - Canada does not correctly set the time zone.  A second bug causes appointments booked on Sunday, March 11th to be out by one hour.

e) If you are a GroupWise user and have already booked appointments between

  • March 11, 2007 2:00am to April 1, 2007 2:00am
  • October 28, 2007 2:00am and November 4, 2007 2:00am

4) Blackberries

During the week of March 5th to 9th a "2007 DST Patch" will be automatically downloaded and installed on Blackberries.  Once this patch has been applied and appointment times should appear correctly in the calendar.

Blackberry devices require software v4.1.0.189 or later to handle daylight savings time correctly in the Pacific Time Zone.  To find out what software level you are running on your blackberry select "Options" icon and "About".
