Blackberry FAQ's

Q: I’m not getting email, what can I do?

A: Check to make sure the wireless is turned on, if the battery is run too low the Blackberry will turn off the wireless to save power and it needs to be turned on again manually after it’s charged.

Q: I haven’t received any new email for a few days, what can I do?

A: If the wireless service is enabled and has been since the mail stopped coming in, the Blackberry may need to re-establish it’s connection with the provider. This can be done by removing the battery.

Removing the battery
Flip the Blackberry over and press the release button (hold it) while sliding the battery cover off. Remove the battery for 30 seconds taking note of the direction that it came out and then re-install it. After it’s finished booting, data should start coming in which is indicated by the arrows in the upper right hand corner of the screen.

Q: Why is the number of unread messages on my Blackberry different than in GroupWise?

A: The number of unread messages shown on your Blackberry includes all unread messages including the ones that have been filed into folders.

Q: I have a Blackberry Pearl and the NUM/CAPS key seems to be stuck

A: The solution for this is to remove the battery (see item above for instructions)

Q: Can I sync my personal Blackberry to GroupWise (email, calendary, & address book)

A: No, we can't synchronize a personal Blackberry with GroupWise, it needs to be a TRU Blackberry on our corporate account.

With that said, we may be able to transfer the Blackberry to the TRU Rogers or Telus account. If approved by your Dean/Director, IT Services can make arrangements to transfer from the personal plan to our corporate account. All costs will be charged to your Department from that time forward. IT Services will need the following - an account code that we can bill the monthly charges to (roughly $80/month) and an IDI for $100 for the Blackberry Server license. Contact Peter Inglis to discuss further.

Q: What is Emergency Call?

When a Blackberry is locked there is a menu that appears when it is woken up - one of the options is 'Emergency Call'.When this is selected, it places a call to 911.
If you press this button accidentally and you hang up, the 911 Centre will call back to confirm that everything is okay.
