Contractor Responsibilities
Any contractor or consultant who is hired to perform work on TRU facilities or equipment or on
TRU's behalf, or any persons employed by that contractor or consultant has the responsibility of complying with
the following requirements:
- To comply with all Federal, Provincial and University-college safety laws, rules,
regulations, policies and procedures while working on a TRU site.
- To ensure that they understand all requirements which are applicable to their work activity
prior to commencing that activity. Where the contractor or consultant is unsure, they should contact
the TRU Occupational Health and Safety Department for clarification.
- To obtain the proper authorization and/or work permits prior to commencing any work activity
- To ensure that there is NO SMOKING within any TRU facility at any time.
- Where work requires the use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), or work in areas
where self-contained breathing apparatus may be required for emergency escape, shall ensure
that all persons engaged in that activity has received proper training in the use of such
equipment.
- Where work requires entry into a confined space the contractor or consultant shall ensure
that all persons engaged in that work activity has received proper training in confined space entry
procedures and the necessary equipment to perform that work or any rescue activity is on site
at all times.
- To ensure that no firearms, illegal drugs, alcohol, fighting, stealing or wilful damage are
permitted anywhere on the University-college.
- To maintain in a safe operating condition, all contractor equipment brought on site. To
comply with Provincial Electrical Safety Branch regulations, all electrical equipment must be certified
to CSA standards. The University-college reserves the right to remove or ban faulty and/or
unsafe equipment, or equipment not complying with the necessary approval requirements.
- TRU actively promotes gender equity and safe, secure access to all campus facilities and
services. Consequently, the University-college does not tolerate violations of the Human Rights
Act, including any forms of harassment such as:
- whistling or catcalls;
- unwanted or unsolicited calls or comments, particularly calls or comments havin
- sexual connotations;
- racial slurs or comments;
- staring;
- throwing items in the direction of passers-by to gain their attention;
- obscene gestures.
- Cranes and hoisting equipment brought onto University-college property shall be operated only
by authorized persons. Operators shall inspect the hoisting equipment at the beginning of each
shift and shall test limit-switches, brakes, circuit-breakers, and other control devices. Any
defects which are identified that affect the safe operation of the equipment will require the
equipment to be removed from service until the defects are repaired.
- Where a contractor encounters what is believed to be MATERIALS CONTAINING
ASBESTOS, the TRU Occupational Health and Safety Department shall immediately be
informed and the Contractor shall cease operations until it can be assured that standard practices
for asbestos management are being complied with.
- Where a contractor encounters any potentially hazardous or toxic substance which may endanger
any person, the TRU Occupational Health and Safety Department shall immediately be informed
and the Contractor shall cease operations until it can be assured that standard practices for
hazardous materials management are being complied with.
