40 Years of Service

Celebrating 40 years—Lois Peters
Celebrating 40 years—Lois Peters

Lois Peters

Faculty of Student Development

Forty years ago Lois Peters was a young wife and psychology grad student with a penchant for teaching. Initially she taught evening psychology classes offered by extension services at a fledgling Cariboo College. Since then she has taught courses for the Human Service Worker program, Early Childhood Education, Adult Basic Education and Adult Special Education. Lois is still teaching students with special needs in a program we now

know as Education Skills Training. She has been a key member of TRUs United Way campaign for many years as she sees the direct support the agency gives her special needs students. As for Lois’s retirement plans… not just yet. She comes from a family of women that live into their 90s, so she expects to be at TRU for a few more years!

35 Years of Service

Ralph Finch

School of Trades and Technology

Ralph Finch has been teaching Welding in the college and university system for 35 years. Ralph is a certified A welder/fabricator as well as a certified steamfitter, and besides TRU, he has served provincially as a coordinator of mechanical and metal fabrication programs for the Ministry of Advanced Education. Finch has also played advisory roles with organizations in Jamaica, China, India, Chile and Argentina regarding trades skills and assessments. Ralph was Dean of the School of Trades and Technology from 1995 until last year, and now he has returned to teaching Welding in the Trades and Technology division.

Wesley Cole

Information Technology Services

The first position Wesley Cole held was as a Federal government–sponsored student in Computer Services. It wasn’t long before Wes progressed from a programmer/analyst to Manager of Network and Technical Services, to the position he holds today as Director, Network and Technical Services. Wes remembers when Cariboo College got its first mini computer, a PDP 11/40, in 1981 and later our VAX systems in 1982. Wes remembers trying to convince Vice–President Archie Brown in the early 90s that it would be a good thing for TRU get its first Internet connection to BCNet that ran on a 19,200 bps line. Currently we have two 100 Mbps internet connections (1000s of times faster than our original connection). Wes was part of the merge of UCC and Open Learning that involved integrating our network and server infrastructure as well as moving to a new data centre. Wes received an Distinguished Service Award in 1991.

Ronald Lakes

Tutor, Open Learning

Ronald Lakes began his career at the Open Learning Institute, which over the course of 30 years has become the Open Learning division of TRU. Ron reluctantly admits that he too has undergone a few changes in the last 30 years. He still remembers growing up in Trail, and feels that it is very appropriate that he is being presented his 30 year service award from Roger Barnsley – a fellow graduate of J. Lloyd Crowe High School. Ron received a Distinguished Service Award from TRU in 2008 and an Outstanding Service Award from the Open Learning division in 2009. As well as his teaching duties, Ron served as Chief Steward for the BC Open University Faculty Association for five years. Doug Peterson

Doug Peterson was hired as a stores man (now stores person), and filled in as mail person who also did the banking and downtown delivery and pick–ups, campus delivery driver, and for 25 years was the unofficial stores co–ordinator. Doug is known for his down–to–earth, dependable, no nonsense attitude.

One of Doug’s most notable memories was when Stores received a package that was “ticking.” Staff quickly took the package outside and called security. It turned out the package was a time clock for timing typing speed – wow that was a long time ago.

Doug’s outside life has brought him achievement and volunteer awards from the Kamloops Exhibition Association and the Interior Horse Racing Association. Positions held in his 18 years as a volunteer with the KXA are Board member, Vice–President, and Chair of Horse Racing. He has also served as board member and Vice–President of the Interior Horse Racing Association.

This past year brought a big change in Doug’s life when his mother became ill, and Doug is now her main caregiver.

Berndt Sigloch

Berndt Sigloch joined the department of Business and Economics at Cariboo College in September 1980 and retired from the department of Management in the School of Business and Economics at Thompson Rivers University on January 31, 2010.

Committee service at TRU extended from appointments to performance reviews, curriculum development, and scholarly activity to grade appeals and Chair and Dean evaluations.

Berndt’s most cherished rewards did not come from personal awards but from the achievements of many students who gained perspective, competence, confidence and pride from their studies, and from the recognition and appreciation of his contributions by students and colleagues.

Active off and on in the Open Learning’s union since 1992, he presently serves as President.

Elizabeth Templeman

Faculty of Student Development

For most of her years here, Elizabeth Templeman has been a part of the ESL Department, serving twice as Department Chair. She was one of the founding members of the department, and has taught ESL since the first international students arrived – at Allan Mathews – “way back… before kids or grey hairs” she says.

Since 2004, she’s been the coordinator of Supplemental Learning. In the 6 years since, she’s trained and supported more than 75 student leaders, who have, in turn, supported many thousands of students as the program has taken root.

Elizabeth continues to enjoy the opportunities to collaborate with colleagues on various projects, such as the Teaching Practices Colloquium, First Year Experience, ESL Provincial Articulation, Curriculum of Place, and so many others.
