What Is It ?
Global Competency is a credential that can be earned in tandem with any credit program – undergraduate or graduate – offered by Thompson Rivers University.
The credential formally recognizes the global competencies – knowledge, skills, and attitudes of a globally minded citizen – acquired by students through their educational experiences.
Students earning this credential will have it formally noted on their official TRU transcript and will have it acknowledged at the convocation ceremony.
How Do I Earn It?
I. Attend an Orientation Session (TBA)
II. Earn and compile points:
Category A: Additional Language
Category B: International Experiences – Abroad
Category C: Experiences at TRU with an intercultural or international focus
Category D: Experiences EXTERNAL to TRU with an intercultural or international focus
III. Submit a portfolio (duotang or envelope) containing:
a. Application Forms, Verification Forms and any relative supporting documents
b. Summaries of learning from the portfolio page (communication piece and reflection essay)
IV. Upon submission of portfolio, you must pay $100 registration fee (cheques to be made out to TRU)
V. Portfolios and fee to be handed in to the Student Services office, Old Main 1631
When Can I Receive It?
If you are interested in earning this credential, you are encouraged to plan your TRU experience with the objective of gaining global competence. There is no formal admissions requirement, but students must start by attending an Information Session.
Once you have completed all the requirements, submit your completed portfolio to the Student Services Office (OM 1631). Students will normally receive their Global Competency certificate at convocation. If you are graduating, your portfolio should be submitted no later than April 15th for Spring Convocation or September 15th for October Convocation.
Graduates have up to one year (12 months) after graduation to complete their application for Global Competency.
