The Details

Ecotourism Student Experience Award

$250,000 endowment generating $10,000 per year
$10,000 per year for five years.

Opportunity

A $10,000 award for a full-time Bachelor of Tourism Management (BTM) student at TRU with a passion for the environment and the ecotourism industry. The award would cover the winning student’s tuition, research equipment, return airfare, housing, food and minimal spending as they travel to an exotic location and spend a semester volunteering at, learning from, and contributing to, a world leading ecotourism operation.

Impact

The Ecotourism Student Experience Awards would provide the opportunity of a lifetime to deserving students. These unique experiences offer students the chance to explore their potential, while also empowering them to make a difference abroad and subsequently, back at home. Students build confidence, work ethic, cultural empathy and an appreciation for ecotourism as they learn from and contribute to award winning ecotourism experiences. Students, with a relatively high degree of specific tourism knowledge will provide constructive input into specific areas of ecotourism operations and carry out a research project that will contribute to the knowledge base of TRU.

The Tourism Management program at TRU attracts students locally from both the Kamloops and Williams Lake regions and from further afield. The program has the distinction of having the first tourism degree in British Columbia, and the longest running Bachelor of Tourism Management (BTM) in Western Canada. This is a forward thinking, innovative, and engaging degree that is constantly evolving in order to better serve both students’ needs and emerging industry challenges. The unique Ecotourism Student Experience Award is an extension of those values.
