The Cohort Awards At The TRU Williams Lake Campus

The Details

The Cohort Awards At The TRU Williams Lake Campus

Investment: $625,000 endowment generating $25,000 per year
$25,000 per year for five years.

Opportunity

With $25,000 per year, the Cohort Awards would provide a group of five full-time students entering TRU Williams Lake with $5,000 each at the end of their school year, provided that all five students complete the school year at their local TRU Williams Lake campus. If even one student fails, gets kicked out or quits, none of the students receive the award.

Impact

The rate of success for Cariboo region students who start their post-secondary education at the Williams Lake campus is higher than for those who move away from Williams Lake right after graduation. This is mostly due to the culture shock they experience in bigger city centres. It has been noted that when students stay in Williams Lake while their friends move to other cities to attend University, they feel a strong pull to join them, and end up leaving the Williams Lake campus before they need to.

The Cohort Awards are designed to keep groups of Williams Lake high school graduates together and attending TRU in Williams Lake for their first year of postsecondary education. This will increase not only their likelihood of success at University, but also their ability to contribute to their community. Groups of students will be able to start at their Diploma program or their first two years of a bachelor’s degree TRU Williams Lake with financial assistance from these awards. The Cohort Awards would be the first of their kind in the world and could be a new tool in attracting and retaining students not only in Williams Lake, but other small rural post-secondary institutions.
