Procedures Manual - Treasury / Miscellaneous Revenue

In order to maintain a proper perspective of our educational mission and to balance private sector concerns regarding unfair competition, the following guidelines have been established.

Departmental revenue

Results from the sales of materials and products used as educational training aids. The production and/or provision of these training aids should be limited to a required level for students to fulfill the course objectives.
Costs of these training aids will be provided in the departmental operating budget.
All revenue generated from the sale of training aids will be credited to divisional overhead budget. Fifty (50) percent of the anticipated sales will be budgeted.
Examples of departmental revenue are plant sales, electrical shed sales, etc.
Revenue/fees resulting from the University providing consulting expertise and services will be credited to divisional overhead budgets. Fifty (50) percent of the anticipated fees will be budgeted.

University-wide revenue

Results from:

  1. The collection of fees, fines, service charges, etc. as assessed and collected by University staff as part of their jobs, e.g. library fines, transcript fees, admission fees, testing fees, etc.
  2. The sale of scrap material and/or animals.
  3. The collection of photocopy charges.
  4. The rental of University assets, e.g. facilities, audio-visual equipment. The rental of University equipment should not compete with suppliers in the private sector.
  5. Interest and investment revenue.

The cost of supplies/animals or coin-operated rental related to activities undertaken in 1 to 3 above will be provided for in the departmental operating budget.

All revenue generated from activities 1 - 5 will be credited and budgeted at the institutional level.

Revenue generated from the sale of printed materials

All direct sales of printed material and supplies to students will be the responsibility of the University Bookstore, e.g. textbooks, user manuals, art supplies, lab manuals, legal documents, etc.

Exceptions

Deviations from these guidelines and/or implementation and collection of new revenue generating ideas must have the prior approval of the Bursar or Director of Finance.
