Brief Description of the Project:
Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL) is looking for a qualified content expert/curriculum consultant to revise PSYC 3151 (previously PYSC 344). This course offers students a chance to learn what contemporary psychologists have discovered about early human development--from the prenatal period through the middle years of childhood. Students will see how various genetic, physiological, environmental, and sociocultural factors influence the child's physical, intellectual, social, and personality development in complex, interactive ways. Some of the exciting topics explored in this course are prenatal development and birth, the development of cognition and language, the acquisition of an identity, and socialization. In addition to learning about major theoretical issues in developmental psychology, students will become familiar with research methods used in the field, including cross-cultural research. This course will benefit students who are anticipating a career working with children or who simply wish to gain a better understanding of human development.
Specific description of consultant role:
During the planning phase, and in collaboration with the Instructional Designer and curriculum developer, the consultant will participate in brainstorming and planning sessions and will provide feedback on development of a detailed blueprint or course framework that includes relevant content, learning outcomes, learning activities and authentic assessments appropriate for both print and web-based versions of the course. The consultant will also provide feedback on the course content and assessments as they are developed.
Anticipated completion of all project phases: January 30, 2012
Criteria for assignment of work:
The successful candidate will be selected on the basis of the following criteria:
- Relevant educational and professional credentials (PhD preferred)
- Recent and substantial experience in Developmental Psychology of Children
- Appropriate and current knowledge, experience, and content expertise, preferably including distance education and post secondary education experience
- Demonstrated ability to write in a clear and consistent style, with grammatical accuracy
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative and consultative manner

TRU-OL uses a collaborative approach to course development that involves interactive planning meetings and review sessions as needed.
The content expert/curriculum developer is expected to make effective use of any prescribed resources identified (ideally electronic resources, including TRU’s e-Library collection and article databases), and other materials and media as appropriate. TRU respects intellectual property laws and expects curriculum developers to accurately cite sources and identify material that may require copyright clearance.

Thompson Rivers University, Open Learning (TRU-OL) is looking for a qualified content expert/curriculum consultant to revise PSYC 3461: Psychology of Adulthood and Aging (previously PSYC 346). This is a 3-credit course designed to give students an accurate understanding of the psychological changes that people experience as they grow older. This will include both identifying specific types of psychological changes and examining the dynamic forces that underlie and produce change. Students will study research techniques, theoretical approaches, memory, intelligence, personality, social forces, and psychopathology. The course will emphasize the need for identifying the ever-changing relationships between the individual and society that help to shape the experience of aging. In addition to emphasizing the topical areas in which psychological change occurs, the course covers the three large age-groupings of the adult life span: young adulthood, middle adulthood, and old age.
The course will emphasize both the role of empirical research and the central importance of developmental theory in producing a viable psychology of aging. Students will be reading a variety of research (generally articles reprinted from publications) on critical issues of later-life change. These reading selections will provide a first-hand look at how psychological researchers develop hypotheses, carry out experiments, and generate the theories studied in the textbook.

PSYC 3991 Psychology of Human Resilience

Brief Description of the Project:
The Open Learning Division of Thompson Rivers University requires the services of a Subject Matter Expert/Curriculum Developer to develop an activity-based online course, PSYC 3991: Psychology of Human Resilience. PSYC 3991 is an upper level course on the psychology of resilience, which involves critical analysis and research. In this course, students examine research evidence on individual, family, and community factors that have been found to promote resilience in at-risk children, adolescents, and adults. Students also explore the intense debates and controversies engendered by these findings, as well as their application to prevention and intervention strategies. The course requires thorough and critical engagement with course readings, video interviews, web research, independent work, and conference-based discussion.
Please note course readings have already been selected.
The content expert/curriculum developer will work under the guidance of an instructional designer, and in collaboration with the course development team, to complete the following course development process:
- Planning phase: a review of the current course that assesses content and activities with the purpose of developing a revision plan. The expert will also conduct a literature review and research current articles on Human Resilience.
- Adaptation of learning activities and authentic assessments that are relevant and appropriate for an online, paced, cohort delivery model.
TRU-OL uses a collaborative approach to course development that involves interactive planning meetings and review sessions as needed.
