English Language Program Regulations

Level Description
1 Students are considered full-time ESL students. On successful completion, students proceed to Level 2.
2 Students are considered full-time ESL students. The curriculum consists of one semester of full-time ESL study. On successful completion, students will proceed to Level 3.
3 Students are considered full-time ESL students. The curriculum consists of one semester of full-time ESL study. On successful completion, students will proceed to Level 4.
4 Consists of four core ESL courses. Students may take one ESL elective or academic course.
5 Consists of two core ESL courses. Students may take three academic courses or ESL electives (up to nine credits).
Notes
  1. For the purpose of these regulations, a student must have completely passed one ESL level to be considered to be in the next level.
  2. Students should consult their Academic Advisor about additional requirements for entry into specific post-secondary courses or programs.
  3. ESAL 0570 and 0580 are prerequisite courses for English 1100 and English 1110 as well as any courses requiring English 12.

English as a Second Language Certificates

Certificate Requirements
ESL Foundations Certificate ESAL 0220, 0230, 0250, 0270, 0280
(Students may use core ESAL courses at a higher level to qualify for this certificate.)
ESL Intermediate Certificate ESAL 0320, 0340, 0350, 0370, 0380
(Students may use core ESAL courses at a higher level to qualify for this certificate.)
ESL Academic Preparation Certificate ESAL 0420, 0450, 0470, 0480 and 1 ESAL elective course
(Students may use up to two ESAL courses at a higher level to qualify for this certificate.)
ESL Advanced Academic Preparation Certificate ESAL 0580, 0570, one ESAL elective course and two additional ESAL elective or academic courses.

Note: Level 5 core ESAL courses cannot be used as a substitute for an ESL elective.
