Smart Quotes

Smart quotes are quotation marks that are curved rather than straight up and down like those on a typewriter. Smart double quotes look like 66 and 99; smart single quotes look like 6 and 9. Apostrophes look like 9.

Smart quotes curve around the words quoted, enclosing them. The 66 goes on the left-hand side of the words quoted, and the 99 goes on the right. (If you're baffled by this, look at the quotation marks in a book. Compare them to the ones on this page and you'll see the difference right away.)
