FAQs: Registration

  1. How do I register for a TRU-OL course?

    You may register for courses using one of the following methods:

    • Online at www.truopen.ca. Click on courses and choose the subject of your choice. Click on Search. Click on the course of your choice and scroll to the bottom of the description. You may then click the Add to my Shopping Cart option.
      Please note that if there are prerequisites required, you will need to click on the option in Step 6 of the same page if you have met all the expectations. You may then click on Proceed to Registration. If you are a previous student, you may use your existing student number and password to complete your registration.
      If you are a new student, please select the bottom right hand option, Create myTRU Account for Students without a TRU-OL Student number to complete the process. If you are registering online, you may pay with American Express, MasterCard, Visa or an approved student loan.
    • By phoning Student Services at 250.852.7000 (Kamloops) or 1.800.663.9711 (toll-free in Canada), with American Express, MasterCard or Visa information, on any weekday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Pacific Time); closed on statutory holidays. Please note that if you are requesting a re-registration, you will need to contact Student Services directly. Students who are re-registering will not be able to complete their request online.
    • By faxing Student Services at 250.852.6405 with with American Express, MasterCard or Visa information. Fax both sides of your completed Course Registration form (do not mail the original course registration form when it is sent by fax).
    • By mailing your completed Course Registration form with American Express, MasterCard, Visa information, cheque or money order, or with a student loan, grant or sponsorship letter, to:

    The Program Admission/Transfer Credit form is provided online and in PDF format. Use this form if you are intending to complete a credential through TRU-OL or are applying for transfer credit.

  2. I have registered in a TRU-OL web-based course. When should I receive my ID and password?

    If you register online, you will receive your student ID and password immediately by email. As well, students receive a confirmation by email as soon as they have registered in a course.

    If your registration is completed manually over the phone, it may take up to five business days to verify and process your request. You will receive an email when the manual registration process is complete.

  3. I registered for the print-based version of a course delivered by TRU-OL and would like to switch to the web-based version. How should I do this?

    First, you need to determine if the course is available as web-based. Not all print-based courses are offered in the web-based delivery format. Access www.truopen.ca and click on courses. Enter the course code in the keyword search and click on search. At the bottom, the course format options will appear.

    If a course is available in the alternative option, you will need to cancel or withdraw from your original request. Please note that cancellation policies and withdrawal policies will apply and loss of some fee payments will be incurred. You will then need to contact Student Services directly at 1.800.663.9711 to process the re-registration.

  5. Who do I contact if I have questions about course registration, including changing my course registration, withdrawing or cancelling, course extension, examination schedule, etc.?

    If you cannot find an answer to your question in the information about Student Services or through FAQs, you can contact Student Services by calling 1.800.663.9711 (toll-free in Canada) 250.852.7000 (outside of Canada) or by emailing student@tru.ca.

  6. Who do I contact when I get errors using the web registration system or student portal?

    If you forget your password, contact Student Services by calling 1.800.663.9711 (toll-free in Canada) 250.852.7000 (outside of Canada) or by emailing student@tru.ca. Please include your full name and either your student number or birth date if you choose to email.

    If you are getting other errors with the system, email a detailed description of your problem and the errors, plus your name and TRU-OL student number, to itservicedesk@tru.ca or phone them at 1.888.852.8533.

  7. What is the process when I register in a TRU-OL course delivered by SFU or UVic?

    On registration for TRU-OL courses delivered by SFU or UVic, TRU-OL sends you a welcome letter confirming your registration.

    The university that delivers your course sends you the course materials or ordering instructions before the start of the session.

    If, after registering in a TRU-OL course delivered by SFU or UVic, you require more information on course delivery, including web-based courses, contact the university delivering the course. Your welcome letter provides specific information including contact numbers for your course.

  8. How do I apply for admission to a TRU-OL program?

    If you plan to complete a credential with TRU-OL, you must complete and submit the Program Admission/Transfer Credit form. The form is also available on the Post-Secondary Application Service of BC (PASBC) website.

    A program plan fee is charged when applying for admission to most TRU-OL programs.

    You do not have to declare a program to take courses from TRU-OL. You may choose a program later in your studies or apply for program admission where required.

    You may also take courses for transfer to a program at another institution. It is advisable to obtain a Letter of Permission from that institution. TRU-OL does not require a copy of this letter.

  9. How do I log in to MyTRU?

    Proceed to www.truopen.ca. Click on the myTRU. In the section labelled Log In for TRU-OL Students with myTRU Account, enter your student number and password. If you do not know your student number or password, please contact Student Services at 1.800.663.9711.

    If you have registered for a web-based course, you may log in to your WebCT / Blackboard with the same two numbers. Please note that if you are registered in a web-based course and you have selected the "Forgot Password or Student Number" option on the myTRU log in page, you will need to contact our IT Service Desk at 1.888.852.8533 for assistance to access your WebCT.

  10. How do I cancel my registration or withdraw from a course delivered by TRU-OL?

    Registering in a TRU-OL course is a serious commitment. If you are eligible, you may cancel your registration or withdraw from courses delivered by TRU-OL, but you should carefully consider the academic and financial consequences of this decision.

    Cancel

    Up to the cancellation deadline, you may cancel your registration if you have not completed any coursework such as submitting an assignment or starting clinical work or a lab.

    Normally, the cancellation deadline date is five weeks from the course registration date, but paced and other short format courses have different cancellation deadlines. Refer to the policies here: http://www.tru.ca/distance/services/policies/registration.html

    A cancelled registration does not appear on a student's permanent record (transcript).

    Complete and submit the Cancellation/Withdrawal Request form by the deadline stated in your welcome letter. (Group delivery students receive information about alternative procedures.)

    Withdraw

    You may withdraw from the course after the cancellation deadline but before the withdrawal deadline if you have not written the examination, even if you have submitted assignments.

    Normally, the withdrawal deadline date is 13 weeks from the course registration date, but paced and other short format courses have different withdrawal deadlines. Refer to the policies here: http://www.tru.ca/distance/services/policies/registration.html

    A withdrawal from a course appears as a "W" grade on a student's permanent record (transcript).

    Complete and submit the Cancellation/Withdrawal Request form by the deadline stated in your welcome letter. (Group delivery students receive information about alternative procedures.)

    ** Financial aid students should note that cancelling your registration or withdrawing from a course may jeopardize your current funding and eligibility for future funding.

  11. How do I cancel my registration or withdraw from a TRU-OL course delivered by SFU or UVic?

    Notify TRU-OL Student Services by the deadline stated in your welcome letter. Also, complete and submit the Cancellation/Withdrawal Request form to TRU-OL Student Services.

    • To receive a refund for SFU course materials, return all materials to SFU with a note indicating your name, TRU-OL student number, and the reason for the return.
    • To receive a refund for UVic course materials, contact the UVic department associated with your course.

    Details are included in the delivering institution's welcome letter.

  12. Where can I check if I think course materials may be missing for my web-based course?

    Usually, most of your web-based course materials can be found when you log in to your course on myTRU. For example, course materials may be presented as web pages, a downloadable course manual, or assignment files. Make sure you have checked your desktop first.

    If you think you are missing printed course materials, such as textbooks or other items usually found in course packages, contact Student Services.

  13. How do I get a TRU-OL student number?

    When you first register for a TRU-OL course or are admitted to a TRU-OL program, you receive a student number as your unique identification, which helps us to serve you better. This number appears on each welcome letter. Please use your TRU-OL student number as follows:

    • Include it on all forms and correspondence with TRU-OL and your Open Learning Faculty Member.
    • Have your student number handy when you contact TRU-OL administrative staff or your Open Learning Faculty Member.

    Not all group delivery students receive a welcome letter when they register. Group delivery students can contact Student Services to obtain their student number.
