Water Treatment Entry Level Certificate

Water Treatment Entry Level Certificate program is ideal for students who are looking for a career as an operator in water, wastewater treatment, distribution and collections.

This certificate will provide the basic foundation, important skills, knowledge, and abilities required to work with water systems and treatment plants. This is the first of four levels leading to a diploma in water treatment technology. The certificate will cover Water Sources, Water Treatment Fundamentals, Applied Math and Sciences, Mechanical Systems and Environmental Health Safety.

Career Opportunities

An Entry Level Certificate in Water Treatment allows graduates to pursue employment from a wide array of opportunities in many industries.

Typical examples include:

  • Water and Wastewater Facilities - Municipalities, Regional Districts, and Industrial
  • Engineering Firms
  • Environmental and Ecological Services
  • Laboratories – Analytical
  • Water Companies – Utility
  • Water Treatment Equipment, Services and Supplies – Retail
  • Government Facilities such as Provincial Parks, National Parks, Correctional Services, RCMP, Canada Border Services.

Admission Requirements

Completion of British Columbia Grade 12 (or equivalent) is required while Chemistry 11 and Principles of Mathematics 11 or both recommended. In lieu of the aforementioned requirements, individuals with industry-related experience may be admitted with less than the total admission requirements pending permission from the program coordinator.

Individual not meeting these requirements can gain entrance through an assessment process and allowed admission into the program at the discretion of the Program Coordinator.

Water Treatment Technology Entry Level Courses and Description

WTTP 170 Water Sources:  This course provides training in the development of new and existing water sources. It focuses on ground and surface water sources as they relate to the way drinking water is treated and distributed. Areas of study include basic water supply hydrology, groundwater sources, surface water sources, emergency and alternate water sources, source water conservation, and source water quality and source water protection.

WTTP 171 Water Treatment I:  This is a basic water treatment course with emphasis on environmental applications focusing on past, present and future technologies concerned with water treatment. The major emphasis will cover: operator responsibilities, water sources, reservoir management, coagulation and flocculation processes, sedimentation, filtration, disinfection, corrosion control, and basic water treatment sampling procedures.

WTTP172 Applied Math and Sciences:  Introduces students to concepts in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Hydraulics that are needed in the program. The course is divided into three modules: Module A - Mathematics covers important concepts such as significant figures, error analysis, calculation of areas and volumes, units conversion, ratios and proportions, averages, and percent. Module B - Hydraulics introduces the students to the concepts of density and specific gravity, water pressure, piezometric surface and hydraulic grade line, calculation of head loss, as well as pumping and flow rate problems. Module C - Chemistry introduces the students to the structure and the classification of matter, the balancing of chemical equations, and finally dilution and dosage calculations.

WTTP 173 Mechanical Systems I:  This course covers principles of piping, pumps and valves as they apply to the support systems in water treatment facilities. The principles of cross connection control will also be covered.

WTTP 174 Environmental, Safety and Communications:  This course provides a foundation in three topic areas, legislation, safety, and communications. Under the legislative section the students gain an understanding of the basic principles of environmental law and the legislative framework under which most water suppliers must legally operate. The safety section will cover topics such as occupational health and safety as it applies to operations and management of water systems. The third section will cover oral and written communication skills required for operators dealing with specific situations that arise through interactions with the public.

Program Length

The program will be held at Thompson Rivers University, Williams Lake Campus and will run for 15 weeks.
