Courses
The following courses are required for graduation:
Core Courses
Optional Advanced Courses
MLAP 112 Anatomy, Physiology and Medical Terminology
MLAP 112 deals with medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology.
Required Textbook
Medical Terminology: A Systems Approach, 5th ed. B.A. Gylys & M.E. Wedding. This textbook utilizes audio tapes, interactive CDROM as well.
MLAP 113 The Electrocardiogram
This introductory course covers the theory behind the specific anatomy of the heart, the conductive system of the heart, the electrocardiogram, as well as the diagnostic aspects of the electrocardiogram.
Required Textbooks
No required text.
MLAP 121 Professional and Safety Issues
The main objectives of MLAP 121, Professional and Safety Issues are to clarify the medical laboratory assistant’s role in health care, to promote the need for professionalism in MLAs, and to present a positive attitude towards safety in the workplace.
Required Textbooks
No required text.
MLAP 131 Laboratory Procedures and Protocols
The main objectives of MLAP 131 are to clarify the medical laboratory assistant’s role in specimen collection, specimen handling and distribution, body fluid analysis and culture media preparation. General record keeping and office procedures also will be discussed. In short, MLAP 131 looks at the theories, procedures and protocols that guide the work of the medical laboratory assistant.
Required Textbooks
Phlebotomy Basics, 1st ed., Fremgen & Blume, 2001. This textbook utilizes a CD ROM.
MLAP 141 Evaluation of Competencies
The main objectives of MLAP 141 are to evaluate specific technical and non-technical aspects of the medical laboratory assistant’s work, according to criteria and curriculum developed by the British Columbia Society of Medical Technologist (BCSMT). The evaluation will normally be conducted by a medical laboratory technologist in a supervisory position at the clinical facility in which the medical laboratory assistant is training.
The practical skills associated with electrocardiography are included in this course.
Upon registration for a course, the student is contacted by a facilitator to initiate communication and encourage discussion about various aspects of the course and materials. The assessment of each course will be on the basis of 1 or 2 - 2 hour exams (depending on the course); the exam format will be multiple choice type questions.
MLAP 051 Phlebotomy Workshop
This practical course allows students to develop and demonstrate the skills learned in MLAP 131: Laboratory Procedures and Protocols, and to further explore the roles and responsibilities of a MLA through a Service Excellence component, and to gain experience in performing venipuncture under the guidance of experienced MLAs. This weekend workshop is offered on a monthly basis in Kamloops and quarterly in Nanaimo. The schedule for MLAP 051 is provided on this website.
