    • POLY 3011, Sleep And Sleep Disorders - Course Outline

    This course is designed to introduce the field of sleep science. It also serves as an adjunct to other health professionals such as respiratory therapists and registered nurses who would like to have a better understanding of sleep and sleep disorders.

    POLY 3021, Polysomnography Instrumentation - Course Outline

    This course will introduce the student to the instrumentation and electrical principles and practices that the polysomnographer must understand. While electrical safety and ancillary equipment encountered in a sleep laboratory are covered, the student will also cover the internal workings and calibration of the polygraph. Amplifiers and filters will be emphasized along with basic tracings and some of the artifacts that may appear and influence ones interpretation of the sleep study. Also, the international “10-20” system of electrode placement will be introduced.

    POLY 3031, Principles of Polysomnography - Course Outline

    This third course emphasizes the polysomnographic recording and will give the student a thorough understanding of biological calibrations such as electro-oculography and electromyography. The specific sleep stages as well as artifact recognition will be studied. The special test of multiple sleep latency is included. 

    The final reports generated by the polysomnographer for interpretation will be covered and basic EEG interpretation is introduced.
