Medical research at universities has a major impact on people's health
around the world.
How can we ensure that universities do the research that is most
desperately needed?
How can we ensure that people in poor countries have access to the
fruits of that research?

Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) is a student group
that tackles these issues through hands-on advocacy.  We have already
had a lot of success at UBC and other universities, but there is a lot
of work left to do, and WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Want to learn more?

October 17, 2008 Proposal Deadline for the 2009 Gulf-South Summit on Service-Learning and Civic Engagement through Higher Education, Baton Rouge, LA,  March 25-27, 2009

Civic Engagement at the Crossroads:  Rethinking Stakeholder Roles and
Responsibilities

The maturing of service-learning and civic engagement during the last
quarter of the 20th century challenged us to rethink the concepts of
"service" and "learning."  Service can no longer be taken for granted,
complicated by questions of who serves and who is served. Learning has
also been complicated by blurred lines between the learner and the
teacher. The 21st century challenges us to take seriously such
possibilities as students as teachers, faculty as learners, and new
models for community partners. Thus the questions multiply: Can we
expand our stakeholder base to government and corporate partners? How
can students take on teaching and leadership roles? What models help
faculty to learn best? How can community partners share the role of
instructor? Join colleagues representing a variety of stakeholders at
the 2009 Gulf-South Summit to explore the many ways service-learning and
civic engagement can be redefined to meet the needs of the 21st century.

Please see the Gulf-South Summit website .

Nov 1-4, 2008 CBIE 2008 Conference, Shaping Worldviews : Diversity and international Education FairMont Newfoundland Hotel, St John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador

Supporting the education sector in the pursuit of international education initiatives, CBIE offers a first-class conference - packed with the latest developments in international education. Through our conferences, we give voice to national and cross-border issues and priorities in international education. Professional development and networking are a key component of CBIE's annual conference. We offer practical and theoretical sessions on international education in its broadest sense.

Theme: Shaping Worldviews: Diversity and International Education
Diversity is central to international education. As international educators, we seek international study, research and teaching opportunities for ourselves and our students in order to experience a range of views - academic, cultural, political and more. We welcome international students, researchers and professors because they bring diversity to our midst. And, through international experience and internationalized campuses, we help to shape inclusive, multifaceted worldviews. But, as international educators, we are constantly reflecting on whether we and the educational institutions within which we work are managing diversity in a way that engenders learning and expanded perspectives - in the classroom, on the campus and in the community. The conference will focus on sessions that offer lessons learned and best practices regarding diversity in international education.
