The Program

Welcome to the Community Home Health Nursing Program, an exciting distance learning opportunity for registered nurses. This two-course program was jointly designed by TRU's School of Nursing, the Thompson Health Region, and Health Canada. The program is intended to enable registered nurses to develop the required knowledge and skills to meet the standards and competencies for professional nursing care in the home. The program's theoretical and experiential learning opportunities will allow you to build on your past nursing education and experiences to acquire beginning competency in Community Home Care Nursing.
Each course is eligible for 3 elective credits toward TRU's post-RN BSN program.

Community Home Health Nursing (by distance) - NURS 380

(3 credits)
Nursing 380 emphasizes the development of theoretical knowledge of major concepts and principles underlying community home care nursing practice. A combination of self-directed studies including readings, learning activities, and clinical reflection, will be the primary modes used to advance the participant's theoretical knowledge underpinning the competent practice of community home care nursing.
Prerequisite: Practicing Membership in the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC).

Community Home Health Nursing Practice (by distance) - NURS 381

(3 credits) 
This clinical course consists of 70 hours of preceptored practice experience in community home health nursing. Successful completion of this course requires satisfactory clinical performance using Community Home Care Nursing standards and competencies as a guide to evaluation. Clinical sites will be assigned according to the participant needs and clinical placement suitability.
Prerequisites:
1. Practicing registration with CRNBC, with a minimum of 1500 clinical practice hours within the past 3 years OR current registration in the TRU Post-RN Baccalaureate Program.
2. Successful completion of NURS 380 OR written waiver from the instructor.
3. Basic Cardiac Life Support 'C' level certificate.

  • Completed Application for Admission to TRU

  • A $25.00 Application Processing Fee if you have never attended TRU before

  • Proof of membership in the Registered Nurse Association of British Columbia or equivalent provincial body. (Practicing membership with CRNBC or equivalent must be maintained by applicants planning to take NURS 381)

  • Verification of 1500 hours of nursing practice in the past three years

  • A copy of CPR Level C Certificate

  • Registration form and tuition or sponsorship letter
