Please Note:  Times, dates, prices and course offerings subject to change .
Because we are a Cost Recovery Department, there are
no refunds once a course starts.  Courses are checked one week prior to the start of each course & if there are not enough registrants, the course will be cancelled.  PLEASE REGISTER EARLY . To receive a refund, a person must withdraw one week prior to the start of the course.  If the course falls on a Saturday or Sunday a withdrawal must be done the Friday previous.  If the course is cancelled a full refund will be issued.  Costs for courses can change periodically.

Management Skills for Supervisors Certificate Program

Thompson Rivers University certifies this 12-day program designed for middle managers and supervisors. Clients completing all three parts of the Management Skills for Supervisors program will receive upon application to the Registrar at TRU, 3 credits for BUAD 262 (Supervision) and 3 unassigned credits towards completion of the requirements for a TRU Diploma in Business. All instruction is provided by Dianne Kerr, B.A. (Honours - Communication) and Mary Garson, B.A. (Psychology) and MA (Organizational Development).

Advanced Management Skills (YMSS 104)

A 3-day program designed for the manager who has taken the certificate Management Skills for Supervisors or an equivalent supervisory training course. Basic communication and assertive skills are a prerequisite. The program will focus on developing competency in the following areas:

Day 1 - Leadership and Team Building

As our organizations shift to flatten and more responsive systems are being used, increasing demands are placed on leaders to develop participatory and principled approaches to their leadership role. Participants will learn:

  • Personal leadership styles and how to expand their strengths
  • The difference between managing and leading
  • To develop personal power in order to maximize their level of influence
  • Group dynamics and how to develop strategies to manage difficult team members
  • Setting ground rules to guide a team
Day 2 - Problem Solving and Decision Making

Today's leaders need to understand the balance of management authority and team empowerment. Participants will learn:

  • The decision making continuum
  • The nature of creativity in the problem solving process
  • Working with problem solving models to facilitate a dynamic, interactive approach to problem solving and decision making
  • Techniques to guide groups through the decision making process
Day 3 - Negotiation Skills

The growing emphasis on teamwork requires the development of cooperation and collaboration. This module will enhance basic conflict management skills and develop necessary sheets for day-to-day negotiations in the workplace. Participants will learn:

  • The pre-requisites for successful negotiation
  • The fundamentals of negotiating agreements
  • Strategies to manage unfair and manipulative tactics
  • The role of a supervisor in mediating third party disputes

The Art of Labour Relations (MASK 058)

Labour Relations issues are discussed in relation to The Labour Relations Code, The Collective Agreement, Mediation & Dispute Resolutions, The Arbitration Process, Mediation & Dispute Resolution. The course is designed for owner-operators or senior managers.

Recruiting and Retaining Quality Employees (MASK 057)
