Program Description

This unique two-year diploma program prepares graduates for careers in policing and other justice-related areas (sheriffs, corrections, parole etc.), while enabling students who desire to continue their education to ladder into degree programs in criminology, arts and business (may require some bridging courses). The program was developed in close liaison with police and other justice agencies to ensure graduates would have the breadth of skills and knowledge required for a justice-related career.

Admission Requirements:

Educational Requirements

  1. Completion of BC Grade 12 (or equivalent)
  2. English requirement: 73% on the combined English 12 and Government exam (within the last five years),
  3. OR Level 4 on the composition section of the LPI (within the last two years), OR completion of English 060, OR completion of ESAL 057 and ESAL 058 with a grade of C+
  4. Any Math 11 (For students only considering laddering to degree programs, Principles of Math 11 and 12 as well as a second language to grade 12 are strongly recommended).

    General Requirements 

    • Proof of Canadian Citizenship or Landed Immigrant status required if applicant not born in Canada.
    • No Drivers Licence required to apply to the program.
    • Year Two students – BC Class 5, 7N or equivalent needed to complete the Justice Institute’s, Driving With Finess, (a required component of JUST 245 Police Skills)
    • It is recommended that all students hold a BC Class 5, (valid drivers licence) at the end of the program to apply for entry level jobs as noted above in the program description.

      Application Procedure for Program:

      Admissions encourage you to submit an Application for Admission form and related documentation as soon as you complete each of the requirements. However, the minimum documentation which will be accepted is as follows:

      1. $25.50 application Processing Fee for first time applicants to TRU.
      2. A completed Application for Admission form.
      3. An official high school transcript showing graduation and grades for Math 11 and English 12 or an official interim transcript showing enrolment in these courses. Transcripts are required even if the applicant is applying as a Mature student.

      Language Proficiency Index (LPI):

      The LPI test score is valid for admission only if it has been written within the last 2 years. If your test was written over two years ago, you must rewrite.

      For scheduled testing sessions students must register to write though UBS-ARES. Information/registration pamphlets can be picked up the TRU Assessment Centre, Room OM 1762, (250)828-5470 or you may contact UBC directly at: http://www/lpi.ubc.ca.

      The fee is $99. It is your responsibility to supply a copy of Language Proficiency result to Admissions. Admissions fax number is (250)371-5960.

      Registration and Payment of Fees

      You will be notified by admissions once you have been accepted to your limited enrolment program and will receive registration information once admittance has been finalized. Once admitted, you should be prepared to pay a commitment fee of $500 to secure your seat in the program. The commitment fee will be applied as a deposit toward Fall tuition.

        * Sociology note

        – SOCI 1110 (or ANTH 1210) is strongly recommended but not required. Students planning on taking additional sociology elective courses numbered 200 or higher (except for the required courses SOCI 2010 and SOCI 2590) must complete SOCI 1110 and SOCI 1210 first. Students taking only SOCI 20100 and SOCI 2590 are not required to take SOCI 1110 or SOCI 1210.

          Fees for Police and Justice Studies Diploma

          All costs below are approximate and are

          subject to possible change.  Total cost for all tuition, fees and books is currently anticipated to be approximately $6.000 for first year and $6,500 for second year. THIS PROGRAM IS STUDENT LOAN ELIGIBLE.
