Employment Options
You have six different options for employment if you are an international student or graduate looking for employment in Canada.
Work on Campus
You can work on the TRU Campus for ARAMARK at the various food services. To be eligible to work on-campus you must:
- Drop off your resume to the ARAMARK office in the Campus Activity Centre, Room 123
- If hired, ARAMARK will offer you an Employment Contract Form. Both you and ARAMARK will fill this out together.
- After completing, you bring both the form and your study permit to Service Canada to obtain your Social Insurance Number (SIN).
- You will not be allowed to begin your employment on-campus until you hold your SIN.
You can work up to 20 hours per week during the school year and full-time during school breaks. To be eligible for this program you must:
- Be a full-time student for at least six months prior to the date of your work permit application
- Have a valid study permit
- Be studying at a participating post-secondary institution (TRU)
- Be in satisfactory academic standing
- Sign a form authorizing the institution (TRU), the province (BC) and the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to share your personal information.
You can work as a co-op student or intern for a period of 4, 8 or 12 months. To be eligible for this program you must have a valid work permit. In order to obtain a work permit, you must fully meet these conditions:- Have a valid study permit
- Your co-op work term or internship cannot be more than 50 % of your total program of study
- Your employment must be an essential part of your academic program, certified by a letter from a responsible academic official of the institution (TRU)
You can work for up to three years after graduation in any field. To be eligible for this program you must fully meet the following requirements: - Studied full-time in Canada and completed a program that lasted at least 8 months
- Graduated from a public post-secondary institution (TRU)
- Must apply for a work permit within 90 days of receiving written confirmation from your institution (TRU) providing you have met the requirements of completing your academic program
- Must have completed and passed your program of study and received notification that you are eligible to obtain your degree, diploma or certificate.
- Must have a valid study permit when you apply for your work permit
You could be supported for permanent residency by a BC employer through the BC Provincial Nominee Program.Applications in the Skilled Workers category must fall under a specific list of eligible occupations. There are many other requirements of the BC Provincial Nominee Program displayed in the Requirements for Strategic Occupations. Together, you and your potential employer submit a joint application to the program which includes your employer's job offer letter.
The letter must include the following information:
- The job title
- A description of the duties and responsibilities involved
- Details of the pay rate
- Standard hours of work expected of the prospective employee
- Statement showing the position is considered permanent and full-time
If you meet the selection criteria, you could become a permanent Canadian resident. Programs like the Federal Skilled Worker and Canadian Experience Class make the process faster. Before you can apply for permanent residence, you must:
- Plan to live outside of Quebec
- Be an international graduate from a Canadian post-secondary institution (TRU) with a minimum of one year of full-time (or equivalent) skilled work experience in Canada.
- Have obtained your experience in Canada with the proper work or study authorization.
- Apply while working in Canada or within one year of leaving your job in Canada.
