How does co-op work?
Tourism co-op is an elective option - BTM students can count two work terms for up to 6 graduating lower level elective credits.
You must apply to be accepted into the BTM co-op option. Applicants are evaluated by their GPA and a short written assignment - currently BTM co-op students must maintain a GPA of 2.33 to be eligible for the co-op option.
Once you have been accepted into the BTM co-op, you must register into COOP1000. This course is a required element of Co-op and must be completed prior to a first co-op work term. It is also the coordinators role to work with you one on one on career advice and to contact employers for co-op job postings.
Co-op is a competitive model, once accepted students are given access to Job Postings and choose which positions that they want to appy to - based on interest and program relevance. BTM co-op students (depending on year) may be able to accept up to three co-op positions prior to graduation.
Is co-op a course of study for credit?
Yes! Co-op is a course of study complete with a career managment seminar taught during your first year with co-op. Each co-op work term is a course that you must register for and that will appear on your transcripts. Bachelor of Tourism Management students that achieve three or more work terms will receive the co-op designation on their degree. Currently, co-op courses are non-credit electives.
Does taking the co-op option extend my graduation year?
No, depending on when you choose to complete your work terms and your year of acceptance into co-op, you can still graduate with the co-op option within four years. Students can however, extend their graduation by a semester or two in order to gain additional real world work experience prior to graduation.
What is the co-op cycle for work terms?
CpCo-op participation is based on the TRU academic tri-semester system. Students can choose to apply for work terms that begin in May, September or January semesters - each work term is typically four months in length. Students have the option to combine work terms and remain with an employer for up to 12 months continuously depending on individual program regulations.
Are co-op work terms paid career related opportunities?
ThreYes, that is correct. Co-op work terms with few exceptions are paid full time opportunities. The employer sets the rate of pay and the relationship between you and the employer is the same as a typical employment situation.
Are there opportunities for international co-op work terms?
Yes. TRU co-op has a co-op abroad program which will assist you in developing international co-op work terms. Each year TRU co-op students travel to work around the globe. Go to Co-op Abroad for more information.
What can I do with my degree after graduation?
A Bachelor of Tourism Management is very versatile. The following are examples of positions that can be obtained with various majors within the BTM; transportation, travel services, international program development, municipal planning, event & sports management, food & beverage, recreation and entertainment, just to name a few.
