Bachelor of Sciences Co-operative Education Program
Science Co-operative Education combines on-campus study with off-campus paid work experience. Students entering their first year of Bachelor of Natural Resource Science or their second year of the Bachelor of Science in Biology, Chemical Biology, Chemistry or Physics may apply for acceptance into the program. The acceptance process considers factors such as communication skills, interpersonal skills, grade point average, and most importantly, attitude. During their four, eight, and twelve month work terms, students work on a full time basis. Work terms begin in September, January and May.
When to join?
Students apply to join the Science Co-op Program in the first or second year of their degree, depending on their program:
Bachelor of Natural Resource Science
- Research and assessment of biological, chemical, and physical data
- Wildlife assessment, habitat restoration, site reclamation and watershed restoration
- GPS data collection
- Training and program implementation
- Computer research skills
- Interpret topographic and forest cover maps
Bachelor of Science Biology
- Animal Biology, Cellular, Molecular and Microbial Biology, Ecology and Environmental Biology Environmental and conservation education
- Written and oral presentations
- Titration, chromatography, spectrophotometry
- Quantitative and qualitative sampling techniques
- Map and compass training
- Simulation of ecological scenarios
- Statistical analysis of biological data
Chemical Biology
- Quantitative and qualitative analysis
- Titration, chromatography, spectrophotometry
- Statistical analysis and computer applications
- Familiarity with research methods and development
- Technical writing for laboratory
- Data analysis Chemistry or Environmental Chemistry
- Quantitative and qualitative analysis
- Isolation/purification methods for organic and inorganic compounds
- General computer skills like spreadsheets and word-processing
- Field sampling
- Mapping and field support
- Technical writing for laboratory
Physics
- Design, assembly and testing of electronic circuits
- Proficient in the use of statistic to analyze experimental data
- Knowledge of mathematical software
- Good understanding of optics, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics and acoustics
- Familiar with computer programming
- Able to write technical and scientific reports
