Applied Business Technology Online (ABT)

  • Administrative Assistant Online Certificate
  • Legal Administrative Assistant Online Certificate

The Applied Business Technology Online Program at Thompson Rivers University offers an online option for learning.  It is available for those students who are unable to attend the on-site program or desire more flexibility.  TRU offers the online courses through BCcampus.  BCcampus is a collaboration of post-secondary institutions in British Columbia providing one online access point to post-secondary online courses.

The courses are designed to prepare students for entry-level positions or to assist students in upgrading technology skills.

There are two separate Online Certificate Programs available:

The Administrative Assistant Online Certificate program is designed to prepare students for employment in a wide range of positions in business.  Successful graduates will possess excellent communication skills, be team players, and have a positive attitude.  They will be flexible and able to work on their own initiative.  Administrative assistants are creative and have the ability to solve problems and exercise good judgment.  They will be proficient in a variety of software applications and possess a good knowledge of the business environment.  As key employees in an organization, administrative assistants need to keep current and be ready to take on new responsibilities.

The Legal Administrative Assistant Online Certificate program is designed to provide learners with the legal training required by local law firms, providing students with skills in keyboarding and transcription, along with knowledge of proper procedures and terminology used within the legal system.  Learners who are interested in taking this program should have previous office experience.  These courses are offered all year.  With the exception of courses that have required prerequisites, the courses may be taken in any order.

A computer with Internet access, the required software and specific equipment (foot pedal) is needed.  In addition, most courses have specific textbook requirements.  All courses have individual fees payable prior to the start of the course.
