Why Study Business at TRU?
Small Class Sizes
Most classes are capped at 40 students, which is much smaller than the two or three hundred that might be found in introductory classes at many large universities. This added contact time allows faculty members to provide more thorough instruction and thus makes the learning process easier and more enjoyable for the student.
Approachable Instructors
TRU is a teaching-centred institution. Faculty members are available to students for at least five hours a week but are generally available more often to lend a helping hand. Most take time out of their busy schedule to mentor teams in one of the many business competitions that our students enter each year. You can also expect faculty to know your name and take a sincere interest in your future.
Innovative Teaching Methods
Case studies, class presentations, guest speakers, field trips, company reports, simulations, and business competitions are all used extensively to enhance the student's learning experience.
Applied Business Curriculum
Our business faculty include a mixture of both accomplished academics and skilled business practitioners. Through our links with the various professional organizations, our programs are kept very up-to-date with the needs of industry.
Career-Related Work Experience
In many of our programs, students can combine academic studies with work experience. In the certificates and diplomas programs, unpaid practicums of a few hours a week are common. In the degree programs, students can receive paid work experience during three optional, four-month Co-op work terms. These experiences help develop a greater appreciation of the curriculum being studied in the classroom and further develop students' business skills.
Links with the Professions
Earning a professional designation like a CA or CFA after graduation is becoming almost a necessity in today's competitive job market. Our programs have been designed so that our graduates can enter these designations and be well prepared to write their rigorous accreditation exams.
Strong Interpersonal and Critical Thinking Skills
All our programs stress strong business writing, presentation, critical thinking, and people skills, which our advisory committees stress are the keys to future success.
Laddered Certificates, Diplomas, and Degrees
After working hard to earn a certificate, students may want to study for a more advanced diploma or degree. At TRU, most programs are "laddered" so that graduates can receive full or partial credit for the work they have already done, if they decide to further their education.
