Student Activities
A student's life in the School of Business and Economics is not only about lectures, taking tests, and writing term papers. Students are encouraged to participate in activities outside the classroom to build their confidence, to develop important social and networking skills, and to just have fun!
Here are some of the activities that the SOBE and TRU have to offer:
In today's competitive job environment, job applicants must find ways to set themselves apart from others. Thompson Rivers University is helping students gain the experience to make themselves stand out through providing opportunities for students beyond the classroom, allowing students to learn, network and build up competitive profiles, giving students at TRU a much desired edge in the business world.
SoBE Field School: Hong Kong, Macau, China 2011
Field schools are unique academic opportunities in which the environment becomes the classroom and learning is not confined to reading texts or attending lectures. Field schools allow students to think, act and study globally. They take place most often in countries and cultures far removed from the Canadian norm. Laws and legal systems, modes of behaviour, dress, cuisine, habits, expectations and styles of interpersonal communication are all likely to be very different from the Canadian experience.
Differences and similarities in language, culture, tradition, and religion are more apparent as you travel and study abroad. An understanding of these differences and similarities provide a context and framework for thinking globally and doing business outside of Canada.
Experience diversity: SOBE China Field Trip
Thompson River University business students traveled to Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai in Spring of 2009. During this field trip, not only did the students visit a variety of of businesses, but as well were able to experience and learn about the culture, language, and history of China. Through visiting some of the top Fortune 500 companies operating in China, the students were given insight into business operations and production, strategy, marketing, finance, and more.
The modern business world is increasingly diverse and international, and this trip gave students insight into adapting to new environments and working with different cultures. The 2010 SOBE Field trip will take place in India. For more information, contact Heather Williams at hwilliams@tru.ca.

Put your skills to use: Applied Projects for TRU Business Students in the Community
The program 'Applied Projects' of the School of Business and Economics offers local organizations the opportunity to serve as clients for business students' applied consulting projects. The projects are coordinated and guided by senior SOBE Faculty. The program works with a range of organizational types including non-profit, for-profit, and government organizations in such areas as human resource management, marketing, project management, supply chain and logistics strategies, strategic planning, and international business.
Participating in Applied Projects gives students hands on experience to add to their resumes and expands networking opportunities. Interested? Want to learn more? contact program leader Richard Roy at rroy@tru.ca

Learn what the world around you has to offer: TRU Alumni Mentoring
TRU has recently launched a Career Mentoring Program. The program links students to graduates in a wide variety of career fields. This allows student to see what opportunities are available to them, meet people in the field, and learn what it takes to get where they want to go. For more info, visit the TRU Career Education Department.
Compete!
TRU placed in the top three in 'Excalibur', which is a Human Resource Management based competition. As well, SIFE TRU made it to the semi-finals the National Competition in Toronto. This spring, TRU will be hosting our own competition, the Tony Brower Innovation Exposition, for schools around the globe to compete in.
Competing allows students to meet other students from around the world, and upon graduation, add it to your resume, and employers can see you work hard, think outside the box, and are ambitious for success. To learn more, contact Shawn Kambo, at shawnkambo@gmail.com.
