Business and Regulatory Policy Concentration
Purpose, Goals, Targets
Provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand and analyse the economics of the regulatory process and the reaction of businesses to certain regulatory environments. Courses focus on issues relating to government's intervention into the private sector. Situations that call for government intervention will be examined (public goods, imperfectly competitive markets, environmental externalities, missing markets). Possible regulatory instruments appropriate to each situation will be examined and evaluated.
Employment Opportunities
Students who complete the public policy concentration will find considerable scope for employment in both the public and private sectors, as policy analysts, project researchers, urban planners, consultants, research officers, and the like. Employment opportunities within the private sector will be high within industries that are highly regulated, such as transportation, communication, natural resources, agriculture, health care, or industries that their emissions are regulated.
