Event: Western Canadian University Rowing Championships
On Saturday amidst the pouring rain and drifting fog, the Thompson Rivers University Rowing Crew lined up at the start line alongside UBC, UVic, SFU, UFV, U of A , U of Winnipeg, U of Manitoba and Trinity Western at the Western Canadian University Rowing Championships. The 2nd annual event was held on the Bedford Channel Fort Langley with the host team being the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades. This was the first time that TRU has participated in this Western Universities rowing event.
The crew of 4 , coached by Janine Chan, entered 4 single scull events ( 1 rower/boat ) and all rowers achieved their personal best times in their events , with Lindsay Schloegel (100 Mile House) bringing home a 2nd place ribbon for the Women’s Light Weight Single Sculling Event. 2 of the crew members ( Mitch McRae, Brad Colter) began rowing this past summer. The 4th crew member, though being the youngest, is also the veteran rower of the team: Nicole Shenkenfelder: who rowed throughout high school in Victoria at Mt. Douglas Secondary School , moved to Kamloops in 2008 to attend TRU.
So the team that rows together, studies together? Ironically, the 4 team members are enrolled in the same program at TRU: the Respiratory Therapist Training Program which is the sole provincial training centre for this group of Health Professionals who work with individuals who have heart and lung disease. Their coach, Janine Chan, just happens to be one of the faculty members in the TRU Respiratory Therapy Program and, along with running early morning crew practices all summer and fall at Shumway Lake, home of the Kamloops Rowing Club, she has been working with her crew in the lab portion of their health care training at TRU.
With this event behind them, the 4 crew members will now transition to land based training for the winter until next spring. Any interested TRU Students who would like to join the rowing crew next spring should contact Janine at jchan@tru.ca .
