Outstanding athlete commits to WolfPack women’s basketball

KAMLOOPS - It’s hard to pick your favourite varsity sport when you were captain of senior girls basketball, volleyball and soccer teams in your final year of high school, but Tsawwassen athlete Kaitlyn Widsten has chosen basketball-and chosen Thompson Rivers University as the place to play.

And TRU is very happy to have her: Kaitlyn is a 4.0 GPA student as well as being an excellent all-around athlete.

In basketball alone this past year, Kaitlyn, who has won her school’s Outstanding Academic and Athletic Award three years running, was a 1st-team All Star at the M.E.I Invitational Tournament, won Player of the Game honours twice and was named tournament MVP at the Steveston Purple and Gold Tournament, where she led her team to the championship, and was named Top Team Player for the West Zone Conference 2006-2007.

Her grade 11 year saw the same kind of hoops prowess, with Kaitlyn named MVP at the Surrey Firefighters Tournament, twice named Player of the Game at the Trinity Western Tournament, received a Player of the Game award and was named to the all-tournament team at the Steveston Purple and Gold Tournament, and was named a 1st-team All Star at the Fraser Valley West Zone Senior Girls Championships.

“Kaitlyn is extremely athletic and can put tremendous pressure on the basketball. She runs the floor well and can extend defences with her three-point shooting. Academically, Kaitlyn is a straight-A student and will fit well in the women’s program emphasis on developing the whole student athlete. I am very excited to have Kaitlyn join our team and anticipate her to be an impact player in years to come,” said TRU WolfPack women’s basketball head coach Scott Reeves.  tn_wbbkwidsten

The 5'6 guard, who graduates from South Delta Secondary School this June, will start classes in sciences at TRU this fall.
