TRU women’s soccer lick last weekend’s wounds

By GARY McKENNA

The TRU women’s soccer team has a lot of reasons to be concerned about this weekend’s provincial soccer championships.

A badly bruised lineup missing several key players. Going up against a Douglas College team in the first game that it has had serious trouble beating.

But the most-pressing dilemma for coach Eric Schweizer is his team’s inability to find the back of the net.

“We are really over-thinking our finishing,” he said before a team practise.

“Our offence is running alright. We just can’t seem to finish.”

But it isn’t for lack of trying.

Had a few shots reamed off the uprights and the crossbar gone differently, the team would be on a winning streak, instead of 0-2 from last weekend with no goals to show for itself.

And going into tomorrow’s final games, the Pack is up against the same teams it couldn’t score against last week.

“We like being the underdog,” said Kelsi Butner, captain of the squad.

“If we can keep our motivation up, we should be able to win.”

Coming into the closing games of the season, the team is pretty banged up.

Meghan Thompson and her teammates practise at Hillside Stadium in preparation for this weekend’s provincial championships. The team is set to play the Douglas College Royals for its first game — a team the Pack has been unable to beat this season.

Schweizer said Kim Dodson has plantar fasciitis — in other words, a heel injury — while Meghan Thompson has been off for a while because of a knee injury.

Katie Clark has been playing with a bum knee and Kelsey Butner had some serious bruising on her thigh after last weekend’s games.

“Hopefully our injuries are all back by the weekend,” said Schweizer.

“It would be nice if all of them were ready to go for the final games.”

TRU goes up against the first-place Douglas College team for its first game tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Hillside Stadium.
