Calgary, Alta-The effort was better but the result was the same. The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack's struggles against the University of Calgary Dinos in Canada West Women's Volleyball continue. The Dinos beat the WolfPack 3-1 tonite (Jan 31) at the Jack Simpson Gym to sweep their weekend series.
The scores in this match were 25-23,21-25,25-14,25-23 in favor of Calgary, who moved to 14 and 4 on the season. TRU, who were eliminated from the playoff hunt last nite (Jan 30) drop to 5 and 13.
"I thought we fought a little harder than last nite, "assessed WolfPack Head Coach Cal Wohlford. " We are continuing to develop. We play the top teams and afterwards their coaches and players remark on how far we've come and how much we've improved. We had a chance in the fourth set to be competitive but we reverted into our shell. We seem to be scared. We are moving in the right direction though."
For the second straight night, outside hitter Anna Dyakiewicz (2nd year, Burnaby, BC) had the most kills for TRU. She had 14 and a game high 14 digs. Amanda Frayne (2nd year, outside hitter, Kamloops, BC) had 12 kills and 11 digs. Richelle Walton (5 th year, outside hitter, Langley, BC) had 7 kills. Laura Plouffe (5 th year, libero, Sherwood Park, Alta) had 14 digs as well. Michella Domo (2nd year, middle, New Westminster, BC) had a team high 3 solo blocks. Stine Christainsen (2nd year, setter, Ribe, Denmark) contributed 31 assists. In total, TRU had 57 team digs to lead the match.
"I thought our middles played well this weekend," stated Wohlford. "They are proving that they are CIS Calibre. We had Amanda and Anna playing power. They got better as the weekend progressed. I thought Anna did a great job of digging."
Calgary had three players in double digit kills. Lauren Perry (5th year, leftside, Taber, Alta) , Holly Harper( 5th year, right side, Lumsden, Sask) and Julie Young all had 16 kills. Sarah Lacny(2nd year, setter, Saskatoon, Sask) had 56 assists and two serving aces. Perry and Laura Spence(4th year, middle, Calgary, Alta) also had two service aces. Young contributed 12 digs. Libero Raynell Lavertu (4th year, Calgary, Alta) contributed 14 of her teams 51 digs.
Each team had six serving errors in the match.
The WolfPack close out their 2008-09 Canada West season at home next weekend with matches against the University of Regina Cougars. The matches are Friday and Saturday (Feb 6 and 7) at the Tournament Capital Center. Matches begin at 7 pm. Friday night will see the team do a fundraiser for Parkinsons Disease.
"I'm not satisfied," explained Wohlford explained. "And I don't think the girls are either. We want to improve upon our record, which is the best since TRU joined the CIS. I think that the way we are showing the rest of the Volleyball World that we are heading in the direction will pay off in the long run with more top recruits looking more seriously at our program."
