cal talks to the girls

For immediate release: January 30, 2009

Calgary,Alta--"We are playing for pride now." That's how the head coach of the  Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Women's Volleyball team described his teams situation after they lost their 12 th game of the Canada West season.

The WolfPack lost their second straight 5 set decison in Canada West Action tonite (Jan 30) in Calgary.  The hometown Dinos beat TRU 3-2.  The scores were 25-14,23-25,21-25,25-17,15-9 in favor of Calgary. That improved the Calgary record to 13-4 while TRU fell to 5 and 12.

With that loss, the WolfPack were officially eliminated from the playoff hunt. They needed to win the remaining games of their season (against Calgary and Regina) and have Regina lose in order to qualify for the post season. Regina did their part by dropping a 3-0 decision at home to the first place Alberta Pandas.

"It was like Trinity all over again," said Wohlford describing his team's performance on this night. " We did play better  (WolfPack lost twice including a five setter) but the little things cost us."

Those "little things", according to Wohlford were communication and intensity.

Calgary out killed TRU 66-49. They had three players in double figures.  Lauren Perry(5th year, left side, Taber, Alta)  led with 18 kills, Holly Harper(5th year, right side, Lumsden Sask) and Laura Spence (4th year, middle, Calgary, Alta) contributed 13.  Sarah Lacny (2nd year, setter, Saskatoon, Sask) had 52 assists for the Dinos. Raynell Lavertu had a game high 18 digs for the Dinos who bested TRU in that catagory (51-40)

Calgary actually had more Service Errors in the contest (9-7).

TRU was led by 2nd year outside hitter Anna Dyakiewicz (Burnaby, BC).  She had 15 kills and a team high 12 digs. The WolfPacks other NCAA Transfer, Michella Domo (2nd year, middle, New Westminster, BC) had 11 kills on 23 attempts. Amanda Frayne (2nd year, outside hitter, Kamloops, BC) had eight kills and two service aces.

Stine Christiansen (2nd year, setter, Ribe, Denmark) had 44 assists and two service aces as well for the WolfPack.

The two teams play again tommorrow. (Sat Jan 31). " We want to prove to everyone that we should have been in the playoffs," said Wohlford. "We are out to win tommorrow and then sweep Regina at home."
