WOLFPACK WVB LOSE IN THREE TO HUSKIES

For Immediate release: Nov 28, 2008
Kamloops—“Frustrated”. That’s how the head coach of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Women’s Volleyball team described his feelings after his club was swept in three straight games by the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.
The scores in CIS action at the Tournament Capital Center in Kamloops on Friday night (Nov 28) were 25-18,26-24,25-19.
“Not only did we have a lot riding on this, “said Cal Wohlford. “We are playing a team that we can compete with and we come out like this. It’s very disappointing. No one stepped up and played. Our hitting percentage was terrible, our digging per cent age was terrible. We passed well enough to get some runs but players didn’t put the ball down. We didn’t get any kills until the third set. I’m disappointed and the girls should be as well.”
The WolfPack fell to 3-8 on the year while the Huskies move to 2 and 7.
“We knew we had to play at a high level to have a chance against them.” Says Huskies coach Leslie Irie, now into her 12 th year at the helm in Saskatchewan. “ I thought in the first set it was more about consistency. The second set was the telling tale. I thought we played very well after 23. I would have preferred to play better a little earlier. But Thompson caused us some trouble. We had to make some adjustments, overall—I was happy for our group.”
Danae Lockert (4 th year, Middle blocker, Moose Jaw, Sask) had 12 kills for Saskatchewan. Sarah Nelubowich (2nd year, setter, Stony Plain, Alta) had 35 asssists. Ashley Schurko (2nd year, left side, Archerwill, Sask) had 18 digs.
For TRU, Anna Dyakiewicz (2nd year, outside hitter, Burnaby, BC) had 16 kills. Stine Christiansen (2nd year, setter, Ribe, Denmark) had 26 assists. Laura Plouffe (5 th year, libero, Sherwood Park, Alta) had 14 digs.
The two teams go at it again Saturday (Nov 29), 5 pm at the TCC. Its food bank night. Those fans who bring a non perishable food item for the TRU Student Food Bank will be entered into a draw to win WolfPack Team Jackets or other TRU goodies.
SIDE OUTS: One member of the Huskies had a big cheering section. 3rd year middle Kira Zeeben had a number of friends in the audience. Zeeben, a Valleyview grad was playing in Kamloops for the first time. Her father Greg helped build the TCC.
“I was very happy for her,” said Irie. “She was so excited about coming home. To have her friends here was awesome. She thinks very fondly of Kamloops and enjoyed her time here. For her to play well here was very important.”
Zeeben said that it was a real thrill to play in the building her dad helped build. “I thought it was a very important win for us. We need to get as many victories as we can if we want to make the playoffs.”
Zeeben finished with six kills, one dig and three block assists.
