For Immediate Release: October 31, 2008

Winnipeg:  In very Charlie Brownish fashion, The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Women’s Volleyball team got a rock for Halloween.   The WolfPack lost in three straight sets in Canada West action to the hometown University of Manitoba Bisons.  The scores were 25-16,25-17, 25-23).

The Bisons came to the floor at the Investors Group Athletic Centre with a perfect record thus far in the Canada West conference play, and left with that record intact.

Manitoba led most of the match, and escaped the WolfPack’s comeback efforts in the third set to move to 3-0 early in this conference season.

The first set started as a back and forth affair, with the lead  changing hands four times before the Bisons put themselves ahead 10-9,  and ended the first set up 1-0 by a score of 25-16. The WolfPack were  plagued by 11 attack errors in the first set, compared to only seven  kills.

“Each set we led,” said WolfPack Coach Cal Wohlford  “ We were up by three or more points and beat them to 16. But, our errors then caught up to us. We were over anxious and not doing what we need to do.”

The second set brought more of the same from the Bisons. The team took a 3-2 lead early in the set, and only increased their lead as the set went on. The Bisons led by as much as nine before taking the set 25-17, led by Morrissette’s seven kills and 12 digs through the first two sets. The WolfPack cut their attack errors by more than half in the second set, but their eight kills were no match for the Bisons’ 17.

The third set was the closest of the three, as the WolfPack edged the Bisons in kills 13-12, and had fewer errors by a count of four to two. The WolfPack held an early 7-2 lead and then a late 22-20.

“That was the set that we could have had the most,” stated Wohlford “ It just slipped away from us. The good thing is that we know what to do tomorrow in order to right the ship.”

The WolfPack coach credited 2nd year setter Stine Christainsen (Ribe, Denmark) with having a strong game.  “ She set the ball well when we were able to pass her the ball.”.

For the WolfPack, three players (Daniela Bercelli (4 th year, Outside Hitter, Jundiai, Brazil ), Laura Plouffe  (5 th year, Outside Hitter, Sherwood Park, Alta)  and Richelle Walton(5 th year, outside Hitter, Langley, BC) ) tied for lead in kills at six. Amanda Loree  (2nd year, Outside Hitter, Armstrong, BC)celebrated her 19 th  birthday and had three kills, three digs and two
service aces in the loss.

TRU falls to 1 and 2.  The two squads play again on Saturday.
