GOAL IN ADDED TIME GIVES LANGARA NATIONAL CCAA WOMENS SOCCER TITLE

For Immediate release: November 8, 2008
Kamloops--Extra time was a good time for the BC Champion Langara College Falcons in the Gold Medal match at the 2008 big Kahuna/Adidas Canadian College Athletic Association 2008 Soccer Championship.
A goal by 4th year forward Nicole Stewart (Surrey, BC) 30 seconds into added time gave the Falcons a 2-1 victory over the host Thompson Rivers University WolfPack.
"Sometimes things aren't fair." said WolfPack head coach Eric Schweizer, who could have been coaching his final game as benchboss at TRU " Langara is a good team. Very disappointing for us after we dominated play for most of the second half. We sometimes forget that we can't leave someone as talented as Nicole Stewart alone."
Stewart, who won a CIS National championship last year with the University of Cape Breton, scored when she got a great pass from 2nd year forward Erin Snelling (Coquitlam, BC). She was able to move TRU Keeper Shannon Kelly (5 th year, Kamloops, BC) out of postion and stick in in the net.
It was Stewart's second goal of the match. She had given Langara its first goal at the 39 minute mark.
TRU opened the scoring four minutes in when midfielder Jessie Lebert (1st year, Kamloops, BC) hammered the bar from he 18 yard line. It was a play which was started on a free kick by 3rd year defender Shannen Meyer (Kamloops, BC).
"I feel bad for our older girls (5 th year players)" said Schweizer. "This is something they will remember for a long time."
Stewart gave credit to TRU for a strong match. " We have a great rivalry with these girls. All our matches against them have been very tough. Win or lose, the girls on either side respect each other and there is good sportsmanship all around. TRU came out really strong in the first half and we struggled. We started to rebound and had some moments late in that first half. We managed to squeak out a victory."
She also had praise for the BC C AA: "Its so great to have two BC teams in the final. TRU did a great job of beating Ontario and Alberta to get here. It shows how strong our league is compared to the rest of the nation."
THROW INS: Stewart was the player of the match for Langara. First year midfielder Anca Duncan (White Rock, BC) was the player of the match for TRU. The game marked the end of the college careers for Shantelle Cooper (Nanaimo, BC), Shannon Kelly, Katie Clark and Kelsie Butner (Kamloops, BC) for the WolfPack.
