WOLFPACK WBB WIN THIRD OF YEAR TAKING BRANDON

For Immediate Release: November 22, 2008
Kamloops-They don’t all have to be pretty, just as long as you get the victory. It’s a good way to describe how the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Women’s Basketball team hammered out their third win of the Canada West season. Playing at home, the ‘Pack took care of the Brandon University Bobcats. The final score was 81-65.
For the first half, both teams played very scrambly basketball. Regardless, the WolfPack wound up on the winning end and that was what counted for head coach Scott Reeves.
“We took care of things a little bit better in the second half despite a lot of turnovers,” he said. “ But the bottom line is that we’ve equalled the win total I’ve had since coming here (now into his 3rd year). I’m happy he laughed.”
Reeves felt that his club did play well despite 35 turnovers. “ Win or lose, we have team goals that we try to achieve. There are six of them and we evaluate success on them. Tonite, we achieved all six. Those little goals will liquate into big victories for us later on.”
The WolfPack were led by rookie forward Tracy Kocs (1st year, Port Moody, BC). Kocs has 20 points and 12 rebounds—11 of them on defense. “Any time a kid can get a double-double in the Canada West, they are pretty decent. Doing it as a freshman means there is only greater things to come for her. She played really well.”
“I’m starting to feel comfortable,” said Kocs, who was named the Subway “Leader of the Pack” player of the game. “At first I was a little intimidatated. I am getting used to the players and we are starting to come together as a team.”
The WolfPack head coach doesn’t think Kocs is ahead on the learning curve. “She is on pace. She had the potential to be that kind of player and that’s why I recruited her. What I love about her is her competitive spirit. She will not give up. That will bring her big success down the road.”
Reeves thought that 2nd year forward Kailey Calonna was solid. The native of Inveremere, BC was good on her first four attempts and wound up with seven rebounds and 12 points in 18 minutes of work. “She did everything that was required of her. She really stepped up.”
Brandon was led by Melanie Thompson. The 3rd year forward (Brandon, Man) had 23 points.
The Bobcats fall to 1 and 7 on the season. TRU is now 3 and 7. The Wolfpack visit Simon Fraser next weekend (Nov 28-29) while Brandon entertains Regina.
