CLAN WBB: #1 SFU rolls over WolfPack 103-57

November 29, 2008
Burnaby, B.C. – For over five minutes, the #1 ranked Simon Fraser University Clan pitched a shutout against the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack. The biggest problem for the ‘Pack was that they weren’t playing baseball on Saturday night, as SFU steamrolled TRU with a 37-6 first quarter performance, en route to defeat the WolfPack 103-57 on Saturday evening. The win improves SFU to a Canada West best record of 10-1 on the season, while TRU falls to 3-9.
SFU opened the game on a 20-to-0 run, a stretch that included two Robyn Buna (Kelowna, B.C.) three-pointers, until Kayla Forsyth (Vernon, B.C.) stopped the bleeding momentarily with a jumper with 4:36 left in the first frame. Lisa Tindle (Vancouver, B.C.) finished the first period with 15 points, while Buna had ten points in the opening ten minutes.
SFU pushed their lead to 67-20 at halftime, 87-33 after three quarters, while TRU outscored SFU in the final frame 24-16 to cut the gap to 103-57.
All five SFU starters reached double figures in scoring, with Buna leading the way with 21 points, including five three-pointers. Tindle added five three-pointers as well, and finished the game with 18 points, while Laurelle Weigl (Stony Plain, AB), Katie Miyazaki (Richmond, B.C.), and Courtney Gerwing (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) each finished with 14, 13 and 11 points respectively.
SFU shot 52.9 per cent on the night, out rebounded the WolfPack 49-to-35 and forced 24 TRU turnovers.
For the ‘Pack, Kaitlyn Widsten (2nd year, guard, Tswwassen, BC) and Michelle Dimond (2nd year, forward, Port Moody, BC) each finished with nine points, while Tracy Kocs (1st year, forward, Coquitlam, BC) had a team high five rebounds.
Both teams enter their winter exam break, with Canada West play returning on January 2, 2009. TRU will head to San Diego between Christmas and New Years to play in a tournament.
