WOLFPACK WOMEN SPLIT WEEKEND SERIES WITH UFV
wbbscameron wbbdschuetze

For Immediate Release: October 25, 2008

Kamloops---If the first weekend of play in the CIS is any indication, fans of the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Women’s basketball team better make sure they have a strong heart.  For the second night in a row, they witnessed some late heroics.  This time though, it was their home team which came up on top.  The WolfPack downed the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades 63-61.

5th year guard Sarah Cameron hit the winning bucket with 7.1 seconds left in regulation time to seal TRU’s first win of the regular season. Both clubs are now 1 and 1.

“It makes me very proud to be a part of this organization right now,” said a happy TRU Coach Scott Reeves. “At halftime, all I asked the girls was to do a ‘gut check’. We were down by 10 at one point in the third quarter, I called them in and said that this is the time we need to pull it out: and we went on a nice little run.”

Reeves thought it was more that coincidence that the winning basket was scored by Cameron, whom he has coached since she was in high school at Brookswood.  “ As soon as we got in there (the dressing room afterwards), people were saying that she kept us calm. She is definitely a great leader.”
Cameron finished with 14 points.  First year post Diane Schuetze (Vernon, BC) had 13 points.

The Cascades were led by Jennifer Bridgeman (3rd year, Vernon, BC).  The UBC-O transfer had 24 points.
“She has been awesome for us,” reflected UFV bench boss Al Tuchscherer  “She’s a Vernon girl, coming over here from UBC-O after a couple of years.  We are really excited with what she brings to the table right now. She is a workhorse and has contributed a lot offensively to what we want to do.”
Guard Alyssa Gaukel (3rd year, Chilliwack, BC) had 12 points.

The WolfPack got some solid performances from two of their rookies.
Forward Tracy Kocs (1st year, Port Moody, BC) had 12 rebounds ,seven assists and 4 points while playing 27 minutes..  Lindsay Dekoff (1st year forward, Chilliwack, BC) had five rebounds, three assists and 2 points playing 10 minutes.
“Lindsay had a pretty tough night on Saturday,” said Reeves  “I challenge people: I told everyone that they had to step up. There is no question people did that tonite and Lindsay did that.  Tracy got more minutes and was able to dominate on the boards.”

Reeves didn’t believe that the first win was getting “a monkey off the team’s back”.  “This is a program. This is a new team with lots of new faces. I’ve said to them that we can’t forget where we came from, but we can’t live in the past. Everyday is a new day for us and we proved that today.”

FOUL SHOTS: The WolfPack continue their homestand with games Friday October 31 st and Saturday November 1st against the University of Lethbridge and University of Calgary respectively. The victory was a nice birthday present for second year guard Kaitlyn Widsten.  The Tswwassen, BC native  celebrated her 19 th birthday by scoring 8 points, and hauling down five rebounds in 19 minutes.
