WOLFPACK WBB FALL TO TRINITY WESTERN ON ROAD

(Coach Reeves calls a time out)
For Immediate Release: January 16, 2009
Langley, BC: “We were in the game the whole way”. That’s how Thompson Rivers University WolfPack Women’s basketball coach Scott Reeves described his teams effort as they just fell short to the home town Trinity Western Spartans 71-62 in Canada West Action Friday night (Jan 16).
“I was very proud of the way our bench played, “ Reeves added. “They were involved the whole game.” The WolfPack bench outscored Trinity Western 32-19 in the contest.
TRU led the contest 13-8 after the first period. The teams were tied at 27 at the recess.
For the second straight game, Jessica Mulock (2nd year, forward, North Vancouver, BC) had a strong outing offensively for the Pack.
“She was 4-5 from the three point line” stated Reeves. Mulock had 14 points. Diane Schuetze (1st year, post, Vernon, BC) had 12 points and nine rebounds. Tracy Kocs (1st year, forward, Coquitlam, BC) added 11 rebounds.
For the first eight minutes it looked like no one wanted to score as the teams were tied 4-4. TRU then took advantage of TWU mistakes to outscore the Spartans 9-4 over the final two minutes to take a 13-8 lead over the first quarter. The Spartans shot 25 percent (4-16) from the field, while the WolfPack shot 22 percent (4-18).
Midway through the third quarter it looked like TWU was going to blow the game open. The Spartans led 39-30 with just over four minutes remaining. But the WolfPack settled down and were able to make a run as the quarter wound down to trail by four points, 44-40, heading into the final frame.
In the fourth quarter TRU hit four straight points to tie the game at 44-44. But the Spartans were able to go on a 15-5 run to take a 10 point lead with just over three minutes to go. The WolfPack did not go away. TRU's Sarah Cameron (Langley, B.C.), Mulock and Tracy Kocs (Coquitlam, B.C.) scored eight straight points to make it a two point game, 59-57 with two minutes to go in the game. TWU remained calm, and after a timeout, had three point plays by Craig and Jordan Verhoeff (Calgary) to put TWU up six, 65-59. TWU closed out the win with a six to three run to make the final 71-62.
Again: the story was turnovers. TRU gave the ball over 30 times. Trinity did it 27 times. They were led by Katie Haworth (4th year, guard, Gresham, Oregon) with 18 points. Trinity is now 9 and 7 on the year. TRU falls to 3 and 13 and has lost their last six league games.
“In the third quarter, we were down 10 on three different occasions,” said Reeves. “But we brought it back each time. Once to two points. A great effort , just disappointing that we didn’t pull it out. The WolfPack have a chance to right things in a hurry. The two teams meet again Saturday night (Jan 17) in Langley.
