Burnaby, B.C. – The #1 Simon Fraser University Clan women’s basketball team took advantage of 19 first half turnovers by the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack to build a double-digit lead and never looked back, defeating the WolfPack 90-53 on Friday night. The win improves the Clan to 9-1 on the year, while the WolfPack fall to 3-8.

By halftime, Matteke Hutzler (Napanee, Ont.) and Kate Hole (St. Albert, AB) had both reached double figures in scoring, while fifth-year senior Courtney Gerwing (Port Coquitlam, B.C.) had eight assists, as the Clan led by as much as 26 points in the first half. The Clan utilized their speed to force 19 first half turnovers, pressuring the WolfPack at every turn and led 26-9 at the end of the first quarter and 43-24 at halftime.

The second half was more of the same, as the Clan outscored TRU 24-8 to lead 67-32 after three quarters. Thompson Rivers put together a better effort in the fourth, scoring 21 points in the final frame, however Simon Fraser still handily defeated TRU 90-53.

Four Clan players reached double figures, with Hole leading the way with 20 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field, and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line. It was Hole’s top point total of the season, the junior forward has been struggling with a back injury during the early part of the season. Laurelle Weigl (Stony Plain, AB) added 16 points and four rebounds for the Clan, while Hutzler and Robyn Buna added 12 and 11 points respectively. Gerwing finished the game with 12 assists, six points and seven rebounds.

“We had 27 turnovers on the score sheet, but it felt like 40,” stated a dejected WolfPack coach Scott Reeves. “We had 9 field goals to their 21. When a team is that much more aggressive than you, it is is tough to compete. We had two bad quarters and played very well in the second and fourth quarters.”

For the WolfPack, Diane Schuetze (Vernon, B.C.) led her team with 11 points, shooting 5-of-9 from the field and 1-for-1 from beyond the three-point arc.  Schuetze and Tracy Kocs (1st year, forward, Coquitlam, BC)  had six rebounds a piece.TRU finished the game with 27 turnovers and shot 36.2 per cent from the field.
