Saskatoon, Sask--The University of Saskatchewan Huskies proved why they are the number 3 team in the CIS. The Huskies rallied from a 20-19 first quarter deficit and dismantled the visiting Thompson Rivers University WolfPack  82-56.  The win moves Saskatchewan to 17 and 3 as they continue to run away with the Canada West Central Division. The WolfPack suffered their 11 th straight league defeat and fall to 3 and 18.

"We came out strong, but struggled in the second half," stated WolfPack Assistant Coach Chuck Ferguson. "It was hard to battle against such a strong Huskie team."

Ferguson did think the 'Pack played strong in the fourth. "We battled hard. We had momennts where we played lax defence and that cost us. But overall, our performance was very good. As a team, we are continuing to move in the right direction and learning from our experiences."

Kim Tulloch (3rd year, guard, Regina, Sask) proved again why she is one of the top scorers in the Canada West. she had 16 points. she also had nine rebounds. Saskatchewan out rebounded TRU 54-43. Michelle Dimond (2nd year, forward, Port Moody, BC) had six rebounds Marci Kiselyk (3rd year forward, Athabaska, Alta) and Amy Lackie (2nd year, guard, Saskatoon, Sask) each contributed 11 points.

However, it was a member of TRU who had the most points in the contest. First year post Diane Schuetze (Vernon, BC) had 18 points and four rebounds. Sarah Cameron (5 th year, guard, Langley, BC) had 11 points. She was 3-7 from beyond the arc. Tracy Kocs (1st year, forward, Coquitlam, BC) had nine points.

Saskatchewan's experience also dominated. they got 39 points from the bench compared to TRU's 13. In fact, they outscored the WolfPack 14-4 in the fourth quarter.

“We played with more consistency in this game,” said Huskie head coach Lisa Thomaidis. “It was a good win for us and a good start for us to get ready for the playoffs.”

The Huskies jumped to a large lead in the game with strong second and third quarters – scoring 42 points in the two frames. Thompson Rivers had held a 20-19 lead at the end of the first quarter with five
three-pointers – two from TRU’s fifth-year player Sarah Cameron.  But heading into final frame the Huskies had a 20 point lead at 61-41.

Saskatchewan shot just 6.7 per cent better than the Wolfpack but beat them at the free throw line missing just two of their 19 foul shots all night. The Huskies also pulled down 54 rebounds – 32 defensively – to the Wolfpack’s 43.

Next up for TRU are their final two games of the year. Both are on the road as they visit UBC on Friday (Feb 6) and U Vic on Saturday (Feb 7). Saskatchewan finishes off on the road as well. They meet the Pronghorns in Lethbridge (Feb 6-7).
